rofl thirteen - I scored "neutral" on this test.

I played my first game of D&D over the weekend. My character spent the first half hour stuck in a box getting nibbled on by giant roaches. He pissed off some guy guarding a castle about two hours later and was promptly killed. Oops. I think I spent more time making the character up than I did playing the game.

It's nice how they assume that D&D players (and characters) have no existing love life:

How do you view lifelong commitment to a single romantic partner?

a. I'm waiting to find such a romance
b. Such a romance would be ideal -- if it's achievable
c. I worry I'd miss out on what others have to offer
d. Tie yourself to one person? Huge mistake

Neutral Good . . . doing what is good without bias toward or against order.

Mars, that's the way it was for me on all three occasions I've tried it. I'd spend hours the previous day creating a character with a story to go along with him, only to be killed when I'd accidentally bump into someone at the pub. The DM just had it in for me (probably jealous that I'd continually craft devious traps for him in Battletech).

chaotic neutral. It might be interesting to come back to this thread in, say, 24 hours, and try to do some kind of averaging of all of the alignments here. That way we could have a general idea of the alignment of MetaFilter as a whole. Although it's looking pretty neutral right now.

warning: excessive dorkiness ahead: Actually, I'm a Call of Cthulhu man myself. Who needs Paladins and Rangers when Nyarlathotep is knockin on yer door?

Actually, I'm just glad the results of this test didn't include: "You are destined to be portrayed by the voice of Ralph Mouth on a badly animated cartoon of this game which will seemingly never be off the air."

Which leads me to this conclusion: The wizard kid on the D&D cartoon bears a striking similarity to the publishing juggernaut Harry Potter whose hold on the tender minds of the young seems to know no bounds. Perhaps this plucky ne'er-do-well was not so innocent as he once seemed and is in fact taking over the world through merchandising.

I ask you: Who is America's most popular actor? Why, Tom Hanks of course. And who played the mixed-up wackadoo that thought fantasy was reality in the misguided 80's TV-movie "Mazes and Monsters"?

hmm. Coincidence? Oh, I think not.

note: just happy I got to use the word "ne'er-do-well" today.

Hmm.

This test says I'm neutral.

There's another test out there that I think does a better job it. I'll see if I can find the link. That test rated me as "True Neutral with a slight bent towards evil"

Evil, according to the rules of D&D, by the way, is not wholly about causing harm to others. It's mostly about looking out for yourself....must be that overdeveloped sense of self-preservation kicking in.

Chaotic Evil.

rebeccablood, it doesn't say chaotic evil is the best. It says:
Chaotic evil is sometimes called "demonic" because demons are the epitome of chaotic evil. Chaotic evil is the most dangerous alignment because it represents the destruction not only of beauty and life but of the order on which beauty and life depend.

"Actually, I'm a Call of Cthulhu man myself. Who needs Paladins and Rangers when Nyarlathotep is knockin on yer door?"

About thirty each of Paladins and Rangers would make good fodder to keep the demon "busy" while three score magic users threw magic spells at Nyarlathotep from a safe distance, but the foot soldiers probably wouldn't last the encounter, and the wizards would need a backup plan involving retreat to an adjacent dimension for a thousand years. Clerics would actually be of less use than any other Class, against Outer Gods and The Great Old Ones, unless the clerics are chaotic drow elves and worship Lloth, the Spider Queen (an unrelenting and vicious minx of a goddess who could give several Cthulhu monsters a run for their money simultaneously). However, most drow elves are thieves and would be pickpocketing the wizards while they were "busy" fighting Nyarlathotep. Life is a vicious circle in the world of Dungeons and Dragons.

I came out Chaotic Good, which was no surprise because back when I played D&D years ago, that was pretty much the only alignment I'd play.

"He believes in goodness and right but has little use for laws and regulations... He follows his own moral compass, which, although good, may not agree with that of society." Granted, if the laws were inherently good and right, I'd be Lawful Good. This is why the TSR system stipulated a difference between order and chaos versus right and wrong. The two are not yin and yang. They don't even go together. Throughout history, good men sometimes find themselves in jail or poorhouses and evil men sometimes find themselves in places of wealth and power. Reality does not always follow justice. It's often pure luck and chance that the good are rewarded and the evil are punished.

"Chaotic good is the best alignment you can be because it combines a good heart with a free spirit." That's a statement to which I disagree. There is no best alignment.

I liked this part the most: "Keep in mind the alignment suggested by the quiz is just that: a suggestion. It describes your character no better than a 36-question test would describe you." So it is to reiterate that this test was not intended for us to check our own alignment for ourselves, but for D&D players to get a better idea how to play their character, in case their character was of a different alignment than their own. Still, it's a fun excercise and I wish to congratulate Skot for one of the more entertaining and thought provoking MeFi postlinks of recent memory.

Neutral good; I guess I've mellowed from chaotic in my old age. As far as the "best alignment" / "most dangerous alignment" is concerned, that's given for each alignment in the book from which this quiz was taken.
