Was the "greatest war photograph of all time" faked?

It's an iconic image of war, recognizable by just its silhouette. But was it faked?

That's weird I thought it was already established fact that it was faked. For some reason that had always been my assumption based on something I thought I read.

I think I learned in my high school photography class years ago that this was faked. Is there really anything new here?
