If Buckner hadn't have boned it back in '86, this wouldn't even be an issue. I still remember that with absolute perfect clarity. It wasn't even a Sox issue --I hated the Mets with the burning passion of a thousand suns.

I will remember that dribbler until my dying day. I was sitting in the living room with my dad. I remember thinking, "This is it, easy grounder, put your body behind the ball, one knee down to stop it if it misses the glove. Basic stuff. This is it..." and then the cries. I can still hear my dad's voice, "OHHHH NNNOOOOOOOO!!!!!"

But like any true Sox fan, I think this is the year. I mean, I really think this is it. Honest. Really. This is The Year.

It's just what baseball is about... Makes me proud to be an American (and a Yankees fan)

The first time I ever got to Texas, I stopped at the first "visitor information center". I then walked up to a little statue that was in the shape of Texas and proceeded to dress it up with my Redskins cap. It's the little things.

You know, every year we look good, and sometimes lead the AL East, until the All-Star break, when lady luck takes a piss on us. But if Nomar comes back strong, and Jimy keeps everybody fresh by mixing up the lineup, we have a chance.

Then again I wouldn't bet my life savings on it. As long as the Yankees don't win again nobody has to get hurt.

First, it wasn't Buckner's fault: that game was lost by Schiraldi and Stanley. Thirteen times the Red Sox were one pitch away from winning it in the 10th... by the time it gets to the infamous dribbler, too many mistakes have been made to blame it on one player. Besides, what many people forget is that even if Buckner makes that play it was already tie game already; it would have just gone to the 11th inning, maybe the Sox still lose. Plus, there was game 7 after that... if the Sox win that game 7, then the Buckner play becomes to the Mets what Fisk's '75 homerun is to the Sox.

I recall clearly where I was that moment... Schiraldi on the mound, Sox still lead 5-3 with two men on, 2 outs, 0-2 count to Knight, "one strike away", my dad and I leaping up and down in the living room, convinced this was it (by then I was 11 years old and fully indoctrinated in the Red Sox lore....). We hollered for my mother to come into the room so she could witness this miracle, and she just hollered back "Ah, they're just gonna blow it". Right then, Schiraldi gives up the bloop single, Stanley comes in for "relief"... ah, it's just too painful. To this day I partly blame my mom for jinxing the Sox- all her fault!!!

Great link, though I'm torn; as a New Hampshire native transplated to Seattle these last 7 years, I'm stuck between rooting for a Mariners team that appears to be a team of destiny this year(although tonight's loss against the A's... Ack!) and rooting for yet another Red Sox team that seems pretty good, maybe even good enough... ? What to do if the M's and Sox meet in the ALCS?!? It's the schism of Red Sox fandom that we almost don't want our team to win unless they seem, like the M's do this year, as if they're destined for it.

Cricket is where it's at. Where else can you watch an Historic International Sporting Event where;

a) It takes five days for one game.
b) You can Sunbathe and not really miss anything.

I've always thought Cricket should be marketed to stoners.

I'm more worried that things like this just help to turn Everest into the world's highest rubbish dump.

Though I remember seeing the highlights of the 86 World Series compressed into a half-hour segment of "World of Sport" with Dickie Davies, and having a soft spot for the Red Sox. And now that my girlfriend lives in Hartford, CT, I get to see a town that's basically split down the middle between Boston and Yankees fans.

This is definitely the year for the long sufferers: Cubs, Twins, Mariners, Red Sox and Phillies. Of course, none of them know what it's like to be a Middlesbrough fan, with a glorious century's history of never quite being good enough for silverware.

As for cricket, this series of one-day embarrassments is just designed to lull the Aussies into a false sense of security before the Ashes tests.

Listen, I'll talk about abortion and capital punishment and affirmative action all day long, and I'll be more or less respectful. But start trashing the Sox and you'd better duck and cover. I think it was David Banner who said, "Don't make me angry, you dirty filthy Yankees fans. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry."
