Film Poster Paintings from Ghana

"In the 1980s video cassette technology made it possible for mobile cinema operators in Ghana to travel from town to town and village to village creating temporary cinemas. The touring film group would create a theatre by hooking up a TV and VCR onto a portable generator and playing the films for the people to see. In order to promote these showings, artists were hired to paint large posters of the films (usually on used canvas flour sacks). The artists were given the artistic freedom to paint the posters as they desired - often adding elements that weren’t in the actual films, or without even having seen the movies." - The painted film posters of Ghana (via)

These are so unbelievably cool. They are representative of all these movies I love, just a little askew.

Oh my god. The horror ones are all hilariously great, but the best one is House Party, by far.

... severed limbs in mouths seem a bit of a recurring theme.

As someone in the i09 comments adds... I can't quite remember Godzilla in One Million Years B. C.

I love these and the Polish film posters. I love the absurdist nature of them.

I would love to see a version of Cujo with Margaret Thatcher in it. These are pretty awesome.

Copyright infringement. If you appreciate this art you're appreciating theft. This is terrorism at its worst. No doubt the MPAA will be suing them for millions shortly.
