Phil Greenspun's Story of ArsDigita gone, replaced with terse statement. Anyone have background on this? The google cache still exists of the page. Philip is an intelligent web thinker, and I hope he got a fair shake. The confidentiality agreement is a bummer though. Part of the appeal of Greenspun is how his life is so open on the web. You can pretty much guess. Large (enough) settlement for Phil to spend some time in Europe nursing his wounds. next internet boom, someone takes him on as their in-house Bill Joy figure but don't let him near any actual management duties. He continues to win admirers and alienate coworkers. Eventually, the universe spirals into decay and heat death.

Does anyone know when the replacement of the page happened?

From this thread on his personal site, it looks like the page was changed around June 20th. Another thread discussing the case has been deleted. Of course, on past history, it won't take long for people here to find out the intimate details.

Two words: cash out. Good for him. Being paid to keep quiet is the best profession ever!

I thought the uptime service was meant to have been removed weeks ago.. still working for me though, I've been getting mails from it!

will: amen!

bryan, rodii: yeah, looks like they're showing him the money. i look forward to what he's gonna do next. I'm ready for another book.

holgate: thanks for the link! looks like I'm a few days late catching this.

as for uptime - yes, they decided to kill it, then didn't because of resultant uproar, and I think now are asking for donations.

i think the metaphor Greenspun uses about the arsdigita execs: -- "like watching a group of nursery school children who've stolen a Boeing 747 and are now flipping all the switches trying to get it to take off" -- is not far off. they don't know what they have.

Exactly. I wish I could get a deal like that.

That was a joke, for the humor-impaired amongst us.
