Internet-crazed teenager jumps to death. Is this what some meant by saying the Internet phenomenon was something "to die for"?

Um, who said that?

For some strange reason, I kept replacing the word internet with democracy as I read the article...

Hmmm...how many other ways can we put "Internet" and "Death" in the same headline? The kid jumped out his window because his parents locked him in. It's hardly a case of Internet-induced suicide.

Move along, folks. Nothing to see here....

Good point Machaus, does this reek of anti-internet (read: free speech) propaganda?

A kid jumps out a window because he can't log on?

...ok, I can relate.

"He used to be a nice brother. But then he fell in love with the Internet and seemed to care for nothing in the world but that," said Zhang's 14-year-old sister.

Scum.

Scum.

Nice. All I can say is I hope it never happens to anybody you love. (Assuming for the sake of argument that you are capable of love.)

I was talking about the writer/editor and their agenda, obviously.

'Assuming for the sake of argument that you are capable of love'

So its not also plainly obvious that i'm overflowing with love?. [Polishes his monitor screen and raises an eyebrow]

Sorry, forgot to wear my special "understand what I meant, not what I wrote" glasses today.

It wasn't obvious that you were talking about the writer/editor. The only context was that you quoted someone saying something and then said "scum," which would seem to be judgement on what was being said. Obvious would have been something like "who ever wrote this is scum" or "whatever editor let this get printed is scum". I apologize for jumping to rash conclusions (if I did), but you can keep the IQ points and trade them in for a few more syllables to use in your next posting.

Nah, i'll throw in some more and upgrade to a coffee thanks. After being up all night (its daytime here) and in view of my surroundings i thought i could get away with indulging in a rare one word posting accompanying the quote illustrating my general disgust which i was sure, in its condensed, minimalistic sort of way summed up my feelings perfectly. Obviously not. I have to admit, it never occurred to me that anyone, after reading the article, would read that quote, presented at that point in the thread (close to zbobo's statement of 'Good point Machaus, does this reek of anti-internet (read: free speech) propaganda?') with the word scum beneath it and not see my meaning in crystal clear clarity. It felt right. Whoever wrote that article is scum and that line i highlighted sums up the whole piece.. which is as far as i felt commenting.

Damn. Will you two lefties settle down already?

I didn't "get" that you were dissing the article's authors. I just thought it was general sarcasm directed toward an obvious piece of propoganda. Ryland, did you even read the linked article before commenting in the thread? The article is tripe, and I doubt there's even a dead body to go with this story.

This weekend i saw a friend who lives by a river. He told me a guy was fishing, his bobber got away, he dove in to get it and broke his neck and drowned. All for a 59 cent bobber. Booze was a factor. relation to this story? People dont think sometimes. In china, a boy falls to his death, parents and authorities blame it on internet. A man dies in America, we blame it on, what... booze, cheap bobbers?
