Scary Go Round 2: The Squeakuel October 28, 2009 5:04 PM Subscribe
So the webcomics institution Scary Go Round has ended. No need to cry, because John Allison is now bringing us the new sexiness that is Bad Machinery. It's the story of two schoolgirl sleuths and three schoolboy investigators, attending Griswalds Grammar School in Keane End, Tackleford. Start here. If you don't read John will have a panic attack.
This post is about bad machinery, not the end of Scary Go Round. Also note that I link to there in my post. posted by The Devil Tesla at 5:17 PM on October 28, 2009

I never read SCR but I've been reading this since day one and I have no idea how you found this out. It's just some schoolkids talking so far. posted by DU at 5:29 PM on October 28, 2009
Yeah, this really isn't a double post. posted by boo_radley at 5:51 PM on October 28, 2009
YAY AMY AND RYAN GOT MARRIED
I mean this is an interesting new tack for Allison to take by fast-forwarding a few years, essentially forcing progress on the rest of his cast as insurance against his obvious inclination to just tell stories about Shelley being loopy.
I've been following this, and Allison's taking his sweet time making something happen. So far, it's been sloooooow. posted by dortmunder at 6:22 PM on October 28, 2009

Are you kidding? In today's (October 28, which can't be separately linked yet) episode, some tea was spilled! And a typewriter was unearthed! That is some excitement! posted by GenjiandProust at 6:42 PM on October 28, 2009
I am uncertain as to whether it's actually necessary for us to have another post about this, since that last one was so recent, but I love John Allison, I love Charlotte and Shauna's hair, and it's possible that one of my tweets is what prompted him to get around to putting up the cast page, so I'm not going to sweat it too much. posted by Caduceus at 6:47 PM on October 28, 2009
True, there's not much of its parent's "sexy fun" in the strip so far, but I'm liking that Allison's willing to consider quiet moments and class disparity. He's clearly got ambitions beyond relating the endless adventures of a bunch of eternal twenty-somethings; considering the immense amount of entertainment his work's afforded me in the past few years, I'm more than willing to sit through a few months of character establishment to see what he has in mind. posted by Iridic at 6:53 PM on October 28, 2009 [1 favorite]
Not a double, but still too early to revisit this particular webcomic universe, since we are still not quite past Chapter #0.
And otherwise I'd be posting about the secret identity of Lolbat in PvP, the Saturday Sci-Fi story in Sheldon, changes in Bellen's character design, the pre-announced retirement of Little Dee next year and the dozens of Girls With Slingshots crossovers... posted by wendell at 6:59 PM on October 28, 2009
And since Scary Go Round was actually Allison's second webcomic, after Bobbins (also featuring some Shelley, I recall), this is actually The Threequel, Electric Boogaloo. posted by wendell at 7:04 PM on October 28, 2009
I just love everything the Englishman has done and I love this too. I can't say I'm surprised that his readership is on the downswing, as we haven't even seen any Bad Machinery yet. Fickle. They'll be back. Shelley too I'm sure, wonder if those are connected; maybe he's just lost Shelley's audience? The reveal of Mrs. Beckwith was a total squee moment for me, I have such fondness for all his characters. I'm gonna go buy a tshirt now. posted by ulotrichous at 7:27 PM on October 28, 2009 [1 favorite]

What you say is kind of fair, but it is worth mentioning that we are actually at Chapter #1, check the font page.
Also, in about 24 hours I will totally do a lolbat post if you don't :p posted by The Devil Tesla at 7:31 PM on October 28, 2009
It is a pretty slow story so far, but I am enjoying the change in artistic direction from Scarygoround. Somehow neater and more mature looking than it's predecessor. posted by robotot at 7:38 PM on October 28, 2009

If it's less twee than SGR--and sometimes SGR could be more twee than Hello Kitty riding My Little Pony over a rainbow bridge made of Care Bears--I might Allison back in my daily webcomics reading. posted by Halloween Jack at 7:08 AM on October 29, 2009

Aye. I got a lot of entertainment of the years from SGR and Bobbins, but BM is just not happening for me. Sure, he could be still setting the story up. And yes, John Allison is a man who thinks about his craft a lot and wisely. But I've just stopped reading, thinking I'll come back to it in a few months to see if anything has happened. Because thus far nothing has happened and it hasn't been very funny. posted by outlier at 7:18 AM on October 29, 2009
