He was one of the original anchors for the net in 1980, left in a huff after 20 years over getting pre-empted, then returned after the network head he was pissed at quit. Grandfathered in, but under pressure lately, some of which went public. But Fox Business? Rupert is throwing a lot of resources at that channel, with results ranging from 'slightly less than expected' to dismal. Did anyone really think Imus would be truly competitive anymore?

Re: The bullet shot at Dobbs' house: There was no bullet hole. The bullet bounced off of the house's vinyl siding, and the state police said they're almost certain it was just a stray bullet from a hunter, as it is hunting season and he is in the New Jersey forest. They did find the bullet in his lawn, and the police said it seemed like it was fired from a long rifle at a very long distance. Since Dobbs only casually mentioned it three weeks after the fact, and since a bullet that can't penetrate vinyl siding is hardly proof of lethal intent, it doesn't look like too much.

The Young Turks describes it fairly well.

A good friend of mine had his company bought out for an obscene amount of money by Space.com, of which Dobbs was a principal. He had nothing good to say about LD. One interesting tidbit was that he insisted on smoking in his office in an otherwise smoke free building, and this was managed by keeping his office at a lower pressure than the rest of the building and using an extractor hood.

I've never been able to look at his hair colour since then without seeing a nicotine streak.

(One great consequence of this strange turn of events was that I got to meet Neil Armstrong at a party).

Seriously, though I like how when CNBC used to run out of news, they'd run middle-of-the-day Conan O'Brien reruns with a ticker at the bottom. They don't do it anymore, but it beat aimless conjecture and vitriolic opinion.

If they played Firefly reruns, Fox News would become a hero. Plus, the show seems like it would resonate with the Teabaggers. What a goddamn fuckstick.

"Over the past six months it’s become increasingly clear that strong winds of change have begun buffeting this country and affecting all of us"

Yeah, this country only started changing six months ago, you ignorant shitheel. Or did you just finally notice 6 months ago that no one was driving a Studebaker anymore, why is that, what's happened to the country you love?

"At this point, I’m considering a number of options and directions, and I assure you, I will let you know when I set my course."

Hell is that way, no need to thank me.

"I truly believe that the major issues of our time include the growth of our middle class, the creation of more jobs, health care, immigration policy, the environment, climate change, and our military involvement, of course, in Afghanistan and Iraq."

Really? The major issues of our time are war, disease, poverty, and oh yeah, whether the world catches fire? You truly believe that? How bold of you, how daring, what a noble, contrarian stance you've erected, in the face of such sturdy suppression of your truth to power.

Ugh. This would be great news if I wasn't keenly aware that I'm still going to have to hear about some dumbfuck thing you spewed in public, to the shame and detriment of well-meaning Dobbses everywhere. At least your unfortunate clanspeople will have a moment's peace.

You know what would be cool? To never know the opinions or real personality of news casters because they were too busy sharing news to inject personal quips.

Oh yes, it would be so much better if news casters could just tell us what to think and pretend like the news wasn't being twisted to reflect their views and instead pretended to be "neutral". At least in this day and age you actually get to know where your newscasters stand on the issue. What you're asking for is actually for the opportunity to stop thinking critically about what you hear and accept whatever you hear as the truth, and a reasonable representation the whole truth.
posted by delmoi at 3:23 PM on November 12, 2009 [1 favorite]

I would say that Jim Lehrer does an outstanding job of presenting news without twisting it to reflect his views. I don't for a second believe he's perfectly neutral, but thank od I don't have to listen to him opining. I value him greatly because of that.

On the other side of the quasi-neutrality coin is Anderson Cooper, who pretty much credulously plays the "giving weight equally to both sides" game, even when one side is obviously extreme. It makes me want to throw things when he says "we'll have to leave it there" when it seems there has been no illumination thrown on an issue, whatsoever.

(If I want to hear in-depth, insightful journalism by an overtly opinionated by excellent journalist, I'll listen to Bill Moyers.)

So my prayer to the journalism gods: more Jim Lehrers, please.
