anamorphic images!

Herein lies a gallery of odd rooms, filled with cross-ways lines which, when viewed from just the right angle, snap into an illusion of geometric shapes floating in the air. Care for an explanation of the effect? If photo-realism is more your thing, then you should check out Gillian Brown's 'Constructed Photographs,' especially this completely mind-blowing painting.

I dunno. It's neat at first blush, but really... it's a pretty mundane trompe l'oeil, isn't it? It reminds me a bit of those cheesy Octavio Ocampo paintings where the faces in the portraits are made up of little scenes.

I know it's dorky but I've always loved this sort of thing. Sort of a "gee whiz" experiment, only with art.

Perversely, I think they look even better viewed from the wrong angles.

I wish we as a community wouldn't link to, and therefore encourage, these bullshit no-attribution image aggregating sites. The 'gallery' of odd rooms is a bunch of Felice Varini artworks, but of course there's no mention of him or any explanation of what these are.

Nice footer at the bottom of the page, though:

Not really. It's pretty mundane perspectival anamorphosis. That I kind of want in my house.

Any art that confuses me when I'm drunk has to be at least as good as whatever I drank.

I imagine these are relatively easy to do yourself - really all you'd need is a projector and a lot of patience. But painting 3D perspective artwork on the pavement... now that's a skill.

The constructed photographs are fantastic, and much more complicated than the geometric pieces.
