"Ellis and the other creators of Usenet, including Steve Bellovin and Steve Daniel, made no money from it, said Carolyn Ellis, because it was not set up as a commercial venture."

sigh. as if they needed to ask.

This is extremely depressing, considering how much I've been relying on Usenet (via Gooja) lately for research and fun. It's endlessly entertaining.

Sad news. My introduction to the internet (~1992) was reading the usenet group rec.games.chess using my dad's university UNIX account. Usenet remains where I spend my time when I'm slacking off at work or when I have a spare moment to spend.

machaus: I've always called it Gooja.. or Dejagoo.... Usually Gooja, though. A lot of other people call it Gooja, too.

Irony. The MSNBC article asks readers to discuss the relevance of Usenet on their discussion board.
