chuckdarwin: I replaced your post with lmdba's comment with the full links? Among other reasons, it allows people to use the built-in youtube player. Memail me or use the admin form if you have any objections.

A little explanation.

I’m a little dubious about the copyright status of these YouTube videos, though; they look like a third-party rip of the recently-released DVD.

Yeah, not remotely comfortable with this.

If this is not violating copyright, awesome. I mean - whaddaya want?

From the original performance, the hula hoops in action.

vacapinta - originated from twitter / tweetdeck shortened them. MeTa is hardly the most engrossing read on the web, so I was unaware that they were verboten.

Re: infringement. Surely youtube would have ripped them down? They're grouped in order and have been up for two weeks.

I didn't know about this and it's lovely. Might buy it. Thanks Chuckdarwin!

He's trying to do "Berlin: Symphony of a Great City" -- a 1927 silent film with musical accompaniment (Act I, part one, Act I, Part two, etc.) I like the girls with the hula hoops, because pretty girls are always a welcome sight. But the Stevens' music is laughably childish (not childlike). Wooooo, classical instruments! He's not even creative or intelligent enough to be pretentious.

MeTa is worth five bucks, easy.

Faze, I am completely torn by your comment. On one hand, Symphony of a Great City! On the other, Sufjan snark with a soupcon of snobbery. Ala Pitchfork, I'll have to go with 9.5 for the link and a 1.5 for the rest of it.
posted by jokeefe at 6:33 AM on November 24, 2009

Show me a MORE engrossing read and I'll send you $5.

Really? You don't like Sufjan Stevens, that's fine, but you don't like him because he is unintelligent and uncreative. As always, 'your favorite band sucks', and I understand that but come on.

I can't really listen right now, but the concept looks pretty cool.
posted by caddis at 7:14 AM on November 24, 2009

As for Stevens's creativity, he does appear to be in crisis on that front.
posted by caddis at 7:24 AM on November 24, 2009

I urge Sufjan to dress in full viking regalia and call himself moondog for at least a year.

The movie is pretty good. The film stock seems old, like 1970's photos that had the date on the side.

From the interview: I’m tired of these grand, epic endeavours

Well, I guess two out of fifty aint bad, but if you expect us to buy one more re-release of Illinoise outtakes, then you’ve got another thing coming.

Very cool. Never thought of the BQE this way before.

I was quite disappointed that the "Hooper Hero's" had nothing to do with the real Hooper.

Also, take note as to just how less pretentious the real Hooper is.

This is nice. (Now that I've listened to a bunch of it). I'm gonna go buy it. Thanks, I don't know when I would have heard it otherwise.

I'm listening, right now (honestly, I am, for real) to a recording of a song ( There's Too Much Love ) that he performed with his band in Ithaca in September, and it's just wonderful. So he may be talking about a crisis, but he's still writing and performing, and I hope he keeps to this direction...

Hi all. I work at Asthmatic Kitty.

These YouTube postings are course not authorized but what is these days. If you happen to like it, please purchase it. Mirroring the BQE itself, the buying options are sprawling out of an attempt to make it as accessible as possible still making a decentish profit. You can buy it in multiple forms here.

While someone is posting copyrighted material and Metafilter is linking to it (no hard feelings!), I might as well take the opportunity to schmooze our sale on Sufjan's Songs for Christmas. Regardless of your take on Sufjan, Christmas is awesome? Buy 1 - $15. Buy 2 - $25. Buy 3? Just $30! That's the Christmas spirit!

Plus we are (legally!) streaming the entire 5 CD Christmas boxset right here.

Enjoy the Sufjan-travaganza!

Thanks for stopping by, beelerspace. My conscience is clear: I bought BQE in October (via emusic).

And Sufjan's Christmas songs are wonderful; highly recommend them.
