Nexus One

Google's new Nexus One Currently, you can buy it without service ($529) or with a new T-Mobile contract ($179). There are other price points for those with existing T-Mobile contracts who add or upgrade their data plans.

Engadget took a look a few days ago.

Buying one without a contract? "The currently available Nexus One device is unlocked and will recognize SIM cards from any mobile service provider using the GSM standard, but is incompatible with the frequency band used by the AT&T and Rogers networks for 3G data. Additionally, the Nexus One is incompatible with CDMA networks such as Verizon and Sprint.

The Nexus One's antenna supports four GSM radio frequencies (850/900/1800/1900) and three 3G/UMTS Bands - 1/4/8 (2100/AWS/900). These cover most major GSM mobile providers worldwide; however, the 3G band used by AT&T and Rogers is not supported."

They promise it will be available on Verizon and Vodafone in the spring.

This post was deleted for the following reason: this is not a good post for metafilter. the phone is interesting and deserves more than a press release. -- jessamyn

This is basically just an ad. (...I type from my Droid.)

I apologize, don't mean to threadpoop, but this seems an awful lot like spam.

Five hundred dollars for a telephone?

It might just be the stress of the home-buying process talking, but scew that.

TBH That website is not doing a fgreat job of selling it to me. The 3D flash is particulalry pointless. The Engadget link with the video has far more meat.

This post is weak. Illuminate us with some background on what Google is doing with Android and the Open Handset alliance, and maybe provide some insight into what this phone might mean for Apple and the iPhone. Something like that would have washed the stink of pepsi blue off this post.

Lack of pinch zoom is kind of a killer on the browsing front - pinch zoom is pretty much the feature that makes the iPhone browsing experience work versus every other mobile browsing experience.

Until you can get voice+data plans at prices lower than the monthly price for subsidized phone buyers I don't see the utility in buying an unsubsidized phone.

This is not the Pepsi Blue Droid we are looking for.
