crapmatic, I see your point. I just clicked through for a "what the hell, let's see what this is." It turned out to be much cuter, and wittier and well done that I might have expected had it been described in more detail in the FPP.

That said, let's get on to the message of the animation, which falls into a familiar genre: that of attempting to achieve a social good by telling a big, fat lie. Condoms are horrible, and in any case, they don't come out until the choosing part is long over with.

I am getting sick of Metawikipediafilterian tendencies. I posted a SLYT post recently and almost instantly there were people "fixing it" for me like it was a high school essay or a wikepedia page instead of being just a nice poem with a pleasant musical accompaniment. It is well intentioned but rude just like telling someone to wear different clothing would be...

Somethings are simple. Like this post.

If you have children then it's too late for the video.
I keed. A graffiti penis on a public bathroom wall comes to life and tries to approach various graffitied female genitalia who run screaming from it. The pursuit continues with hoards of girlybits fleeing from the friendly little knob, and he gives up, flaccid and dejected. A live action woman is leaving the bathroom and draws a condom over it with her eyeliner, whereupon a belegged vulva runs over and fucks it five-ways-from-sunday. FIN.

Faze, condoms are kind of horrible, but not nearly as horrible as STDs or screaming infants. Not to mention, if a guy refuses to wear a condom the choosing to leave begins. It really tells you about a person on so many levels when he tries to get you to agree to not use one. Also, I guess because of my age (40) and my coming of age during the AIDS crisis when the consequence of unprotected sex was drilled into everyone in really graphic ways, I just don't understand the whole idea of having a problem with the things. It's an interesting change.

Yeah they are a pain but for me it is just a part of the whole relationship process. You know when you are in a real long term deal when the condom comes off. That just seems to be a whole deeper level of intimacy.

The animation is kind of awesome.

I wasn't being lazy but actually didn't want to analyse it or give it context, just share something really nicely executed with other mefites. And hey, I did slave over a link description designed to pique people's interest :)

And yes, the klezmer! Actually I think the imaginative and very well done relationship between the animation and the music is what makes it...

It's a cute animation. What I don't like as much is that it's a retelling of the old safe sex narrative of "put the glove on and women will come running." My experience is that risky sexual decisions come as much from women as from men, and that safe sex messages need to capture that ambivalence. I've been seeing variations on this message, emphasizing how hot women will find a guy who is happy to use a condom, for well over a decade, and I'm just not convinced that it is all that effective.

It's funny how according to this PSA the "scariest" thing that can happen if you're not using a condom is you not getting any.

How about an ad that shows the real consequences of unprotected sex (mostly STDs, although I bet some people would freak out more if the ad showed unplanned babies)? Isn't the truth paralyzing enough to scare the shit out of most people? This could also be flipped to show the woman's perspective.

As for this ad, the animation is awesome, but the message is sadly a lie: a lot of women WILL sleep with you without a condom. If you're going to scare men, why not scare them with the "scary" stuff?

Although I do believe this was the best condom campaign in a long time. It's not touting the "scary" stuff but rather encouraging the correct behavior.

Pushing an entire human being through a vagina has always seemed to me to be a very disrespectful thing to do to it (the vagina). The kind of thing that should only be done by a woman who has given full consent to having a human inside her to begin with.

So I think the best prevention ads — for straight men — would be to show women giving birth. Lots and lots of births.

You're taking it too literally. I seriously doubt there's a single lonely male, starving for affection, who is now wearing a condom, thinking he's going to get sex. I also doubt that an ad agency spent all that time and effort marketing to that sad and lonely guy.

The ad is a good ad because it reminds people of some basic truths about sex, that you should be wearing a condom if you're single or in a new relationship. That's all that's going here. No scare tactics or blatant warnings, just a reminder to throw a condom on and have that thought expressed in something other than a draconian "if you don't do this you are bad person" message 'cause it people tune that shit out.

Or some kind of creepy montage of high-res closeups of genital warts and assorted fallout from other STDs. Dancing cock on the bathroom wall trying to get it on with vagina face seems like a frivolous misuse of public advertising dollars.

Scare tactics don't work in PSA's aimed at young people. Remember "This is your brain on Drugs?" Remember all those anti-drunk driving ads with graves and dead kids?

The research shows that humor and giving people a positive action to take-- rather than trying to scare them away from something pleasurable-- is more effective. The scary ads are more memorable and they do have some effect on adults (although some of the scary antismoking ads actually make smoker smoke more, rather than try to quit because fear is stressful and stress provokes smoking). But if you are aiming at teenagers and probably people in early 20's, this approach is better.

You win more advertising awards with shocking, scary-- but you get more behavior change, at least in young people with regard to pleasurable activities, by providing concrete steps to reduce risk and not using fear primarily.

The phrase "vagina face" freaks me out. I have to keep repressing the horrifying mental image.

I read some shocking HPV statistic the other day, to the effect that in all probability, if you've had sex with someone who has had sex, you're pretty much guaranteed to get HPV. Which, IIRC, has a significant correlation to cervical cancer.

Also read something about one of the ordinary treat-the-outbreak STDs turns out to not only be active at the obvious sore, but also runs off and hides in the urinary tract during the outbreak, biding its time and waiting for the outbreak to disappear before it goes out into the wider world.

IMO, just getting the facts out big and bold would do a lot to clue people in. The number of bug-hunters out there is pretty damn small; normal people don't want their junk to be dripping pus, itchy, and cancerous.

I used to work in a medical library and would frequently look at the STD monographs just to see the unbelievable permutations that the human body is capable of when under viral duress. I saw terrible, terribl, TERRIBLE things. For one thing, yes shit can get insanely horrible, but don't sweat imperfections, cos YOU WILL KNOW WITHOUT A DOUBT WHEN YOU'VE CROSSED INTO THE REALM OF AN STD.

That being said (and God, I know it sucks but), please wear a condom.

Early AIDS ads were all scare tactics, for example showing the grim reaper bowling with peoples lives, when that didn't work (research showed that people weren't taking it seriously), some thought puns might work better. AIDES actually mixes both in all their campaigns, humor, a message of long life, sex is fun and love, as well as some scary stats thrown in for good measure. They've done some really scary looking sex scenes with scorpions that still squeeb people out, and they killed superman.

I'm with Faze, Forktine, and wet-raspberry.

Not only will a lot of women have sex without a condom; a lot of them will be the ones to initiate the condom-less sex, and will be the party needing to be slowed down or persuaded that a trip to the convenience store is worthwhile.

The story in this PSA reads to me like this:

- Guy wants sex.
- Girl doesn't want sex.
- Guy chases after girl so he can get sex.
- Other girl gives guy a condom.
- First girl pounces on guy.

Lessons learned:

- If you are a man, and you want to have sex with a woman, but she is running away from you, then it's probably because she doesn't realize that you would be willing to use a condom when you fuck her.
- The female sex drive is negated by the lack of a condom, while the male sex drive is not.

Speaking of the "this is your brain on drugs" ads... it's not the positive or negative framework that makes PSAs like this ridiculous; it's how far-fetched the metaphors are. This animation is not an accurate representation of reality, not just in a literal way, but also in a "deeper, more important truth" way.

Eh, is there any evidence that either of these kinds of TV ads actually change behaviors?

Yes. For example the Advertising Council did a lot of research on this with regards to drunk driving. They found that while scary ads won awards, ads that offered humorous ways to get the keys away from drunks were more successful at getting that to happen.

It makes sense if you think about it: we all pretty much know drunk driving can lead to horrible crashes. It's hard, in the moment, however, to confront a drunk person. If you have *some* tool for doing so, you're better off and more likely to try (and therefore more likely to succeed) than if you don't have any tools.

Desire to change is useless without good strategies for change-- ads that produce desire to change without offering strategies are therefore less effective. Scaring people can actually backfire by making them hopeless and therefore, they think, fuck it.

Mademoiselle used her eyeliner on the bathroom wall.

Ew, just... ew.

I think you'll miss the message if you take the ad too literally. It's not saying women run from you because they think you won't wear a condom, or that the female sex drive doesn't exist until a condom is donned, any more than it's saying a penis can walk with balls for feet.

I don't know. Since I had to go off the pill thanks to high blood pressure, I feel pretty much exactly like those vaginas.

Luckily, my husband does not think condoms are horrible, and therefore gets lots of happy, dancing vagina-love.

So, it's a viral video?

Balls blue.

How about an ad that shows the real consequences of unprotected sex (mostly STDs, although I bet some people would freak out more if the ad showed unplanned babies)?

You mean, like this one?

How dare you, UbuRovias! Children are sacred! They're God's Stimulus Package, after all!

Loved that so much, Ubu.

I have seen this linked already on Metafilter. Where? Argh. Can't find it.

of course this is a French AIDS awareness campaign ad. For years now, the AIDES ads have been original, witty, and arresting. I remember their "sleeping with a scorpion" ads, which kicked my butt.

I am surprised that SLYT posts are still an issue after so many of them have been made. I would much rather have a post with one or a few good links rather than one with a lot of filler links where I have to spend too much time trying figure out which is the main one. I do agree that having unnecessarily vague or mysterious FPPs is annoying, but this one is clearly labelled.

I'm starting to get kind of irritated by all the SLYT FPPs with no descriptions.

I love a good meaty FPP (but not bacon, thx). I also love a grab bag where you aren't sure what's inside -- as long as it's great when I open it. So I say, it's fine to do this but then you have a duty to be double-awesome.

I have to agree that murkily-worded SLYT posts are just fine with me. All you have to do is click one time. That's it.

I'm wearing Wrangler jeans because of a teevee ad. If it can get me to do that, it can get me to do anything, especially if it culminates in an orgy.

Brett Favre comes to your town for one season, and you've already run out and bought all his endorsements?
