Here I was actually thinking it might be some sort of commentary on the fact that in parts of the world, women are forced to hide their faces, and are nearly-routinely deformed by acid attacks if they dare stand up for themselves. But no, probably not that. posted by explosion at 4:07 AM on January 26, 2010 [11 favorites]

Hooray for not taking awards shows seriously. I loved how all of The Knife's promo shots were of them in masks or makeup because I just really enjoy the illusion of the music coming from something somewhat non-human, so much so that I was kind of upset when I saw an interview with them on YouTube and they turned out to be normal people after all. It's just fun when there's an aesthetic beyond the music that can ultimately add to the atmosphere of the experience. Glorifying celebrity musicians in awards shows is just lame, such an odd cultural phenomenon, the continuing profitability of which I don't understand. posted by palidor at 4:57 AM on January 26, 2010 [3 favorites]

Genius.
She has only recently started even giving interviews. It's fascinating to see how she resolves the paradox of brilliant, but very personal music and growing popular acclaim.
Lady GaGa's creation is, in contrast, is a very public persona, but little in the way of personal music. posted by BadMiker at 5:09 AM on January 26, 2010

I like to imagine an alternative universe where she dresses up in a weird costume under a weird costume and then doesn't win. She goes home and carefully removes the grotesque mask of make-up disappointed that she never got the chance to show it off. She sits down in an old chair. A cloud of dust rises up from it invisible in the relative dark of the room. posted by I Foody at 5:33 AM on January 26, 2010 [10 favorites]
Excellent. I was pretty disappointed at how relatively little props Fever Ray got in the round of 2009 best of lists. That was also my introduction to The Knife, and was a definite musical high point for me last year. posted by hwestiii at 5:40 AM on January 26, 2010

I should really give the Fever Ray album another try. I so deeply loved Silent Shout and Heartbeats has to be one of the best synthy pop songs ever, but for whatever reason the Fever Ray solo adventure left me cold. And not in the way I wanted it to.
No, it's more like "Artist does something interesting with attention she is given". I loved the looks on the faces of the two guys that the camera cut to towards the end. Confusion and hesitance, then (seemingly) delight at being made to feel that way. posted by dammitjim at 6:04 AM on January 26, 2010 [3 favorites]

Oh yeah, for those fans of The Knife who haven't heard about it, they helped score a bizarre opera inspired by Charles Darwin recently. So that's, well, yeah. They made a song from it available (extra link), and it's definitely unique.
I've been listening to it once, for what seems like the last 35 minutes. Damn this song is long, but awesome. At the end it seems like they just threw some oboes in just to musically say "Yeah, and what!? Oboes, bitch." posted by cashman at 8:24 AM on January 26, 2010 [1 favorite]

Posted here for posterity:
Karin Dreijer Andersson, one half of the Swedish electro-pop group The Knife (best known for single "heartbeats") and former lead vocalist and guitarist in Honey is Cool released a solo album under the name Fever Ray in 2009. Known for her alternately deep and shrill voice and creative videos, Andersson recently was awarded a Swedish National Radio P3 “Gold” for best dance as Fever Ray. This is her acceptance speech; Pitchfork calls it the best acceptance speech of all time.
