Connecting The Eye With The Heart

As part of his Masters project at Ohio University, Francis Gardler created a series of ten video clips about photographer and teacher Dave LaBelle. In clip 5, Dave talks about the empathy and compassion needed to photograph other human beings. The title of the first clip: “Connecting The Eye With The Heart” sums up the series perfectly. [via]

For Dave LaBelle, close relationships with his mother and Denning McArthur, his high school photography teacher, helped define him not only as a photographer, but as a human being. He discusses the tragic loss of his mother to a flood in clip 2, "Beginnings."

David LaBelle continues to work as a photojournalist, educator and writer in an ongoing effort to contribute to the photojournalism community and to give back to humanity. A number of his workshops are online.

Great post. Dave is a legend, especially in Kentucky where he was on faculty at WKU for many years. His books The Great Picture Hunt and Lessons in death and life should be required reading for anyone interested in community photojournalism.

As part of her Masters project at Ohio University...

FYI, Francis Gardler is male. Perhaps a mod can update the post.
