NonMusic Video

Ever wonder what a music video would be like without the music? "I thought Andreas Nilsson's latest video was so compelling I wanted to see if it would stand on its own, so I took the music out and put sound effects back in, as if it was a short film."

"... I think that its a little sad that the only way genius directors get to make financially viable short films these days is with music videos. I know its just a framework for a creative to work in, but sometimes I wish these guys were making there own work instead of visually scoring some else's music."

Here's the awesome original video for the song This Must Be It by the band Röyksopp. And you can find more work by Andreas Nilsson on his website.

I prefer it as a short film. And it also seems a lot longer that way.

The sawing sounded like a squeaky wheel to me. What happened to that young fellow that ran off, will there be a sequel?

That reminded me of one of our local radio station's taglines: "We play your favorite music videos. Without the video."

Pff. They've been doing this for years. Maya Deren's Meshes of the Afternoon is a total ripoff of a Milla Jojovic video. And A Trip to the Moon is just a silent black-and-white version of Smashing Pumpkins' Tonight Tonight.

The Maxime Dangles remix of this song is fantastic, btw.

This is so, so great. I feel like I'm witnessing the birth of a new art form. We can now go back and re-do the tens of thousands of videos that have been made since the 1970s, and re-imagine them without the horrible music. (One of my favorite things is to put a ragtime soundtrack on hip-hip videos: the rhythmic alteration turns the crude dancing into a kind of gentle ballet, not unlike Laurel and Hardy's twosome in "Way out West").

Faze: take a look at this

Not quite ragtime, not quite as elegant, but pretty god damn funny.

Nilsson's video to "Alice" by Moby creeps me the living hell out, yet fascinates me.

Same thing with his video to "Knife" by Silent Shout.

Or rather, "Silent Shout" by The Knife, as I would have said if I was actually awake. :(

FuManchu: this would have been even funnier with Milla Jovovich's name spelled correctly. Still, props. (Link goes to Wikipedia article mentioning the connection.)
