I mean, I myself might be heard to grouse about "hipsters" if I'm, say, at a show and most of the other people are obviously not fans and are just there to look cool and be seen by their friends. That behavior is annoying. But here's another thing: I think the vast majority of people who bitch about "hipsters" are not even music scene people. They don't go to shows. But I too laughed at the ween thing. However I hate animals in clothes though. They seriously creep me out. (Don't get me started on Richard Scarry. There's a reason why his name is the homophone that it is...and that it looks like "scarred.") So the site is pretty much a wash for me, despite finding the captions pretty spot on. (Speaking of, ever notice that the funniest mocking of hipsters comes from folks who are probably hipsters. The extent to which he was wrong has tickled me for years. The best people to make fun of are yourself and people like yourself. I should note that one of my favorite things about MF has always been that there's such an array of people for a userbase, generally well-versed, intelligent people and I've found myself diving into subjects and talking about things I never would have otherwise if it hadn't been introduced to me here first. You can argue about what the meaning of "the best of the web" is, but to me, it's what's relevant at this very moment, nostalgic for the demographic and/or endlessly fascinating. If that means a slew of similar one-liner-Tumblrs, that just means in ten years we'll look back and laugh at how much of a trend this dumb crap was and how often it circulated around one particular stereotype. Hipsters are as much a part of culture right now as anything else that is posted; be it obscure artists or politicians foaming at the mouth. It's threads like these that I just don't understand. In most other situations, if you don't get or like the subject matter, you just trot past it. It will be outside of your does-it-exist-or-not browser fold in likely an hour or maybe a matter of minutes. It will be off of the front page entirely in about a day. Relax. The dead patches in your lawn will grow back just fine.

All a thread has to do is say the word "hipster" and the old farts come out to bitch about people they've never met and probably wouldn't know if they did. Apparently anyone under 35, cultured, semi-fashionable, college-educated and somewhere near the middle class is now a hipster. So, way to hate the next generation, people, the 90s are over, the 80s are over, the 70s are really over; the cities are gentrified because of your generation, thank you, we're just playing with what's left of the world we inherited before we have to take responsibility for your crap. Do I think most of the parties and big performance art festivals I see in Brooklyn are usually boring imitations of European carnivals and the old world avant garde? Yes, oh well; I'm sure the European avant garde of the 20s had a lot of boring, stupid shit too (see Futurism). I think most of Brooklyn culture is a perpetuation of adolescence, an unwillingness to look the morass of politics in the eye, but can you blame us? But we are cooking our own meals, going to farmer's market, creating vertical hydroponic gardens in the windows of our apartments, re-learning old artisan skills, using less energy, biking to work, making our parents vote for Obama, so on and so forth, so it's not we like we totally suck. And you know, old people, we like the great shit you made and did too, thanks for gay rights and punk music and everything, really, we're not all bad, we're just young and pretentious little shits who can't make a living, dress bad on purpose and try to live out bohemian ideals with a little support from mom - just like you did! And anyway, I don't wear tight pants but I do like my Nabokov and I enjoy getting drunk in Brooklyn and getting laid, so piss off sad old fat men, I have some Grizzly Bear to listen to before my "artist" friend (he makes finely crafted installations that resemble something like Andy Goldsworthy and Richard Serra) comes over to have sex with me before we watch a Herzog flick. Then I have to wake up and clean the kitchen and go to work and do my laundry, just like you.

I enjoyed these pointed witticisms making fun of the contradictions of a certain often-pretentious subculture; particularly gratifying was the fact that the author seemed to have a greater-than-average insight into the realities of said subculture than your average writer of internet parodies, one might say a kind of "insider look." One of my favorite pithy captions was this one: "tenley made a big production about crying when david foster wallace died, but didn't even finish infinite jest," which seemed somewhat penetrating to yours truly, and in many of the other quips I felt a "jolt of recognition" in comparison to another member (or members!) of my age demographic. Fine post, my friend!

And regarding the ZOMG about the hipster hate: This isn't actually calling hipsters poseurs or pretentious douchebags or telling them to get off your lawn or blaming 20somethings for the fall of civilization. I mean, unless that's the way you insist on seeing it. I guess you can be paranoid and think that puppies are mocking your lifestyle. I went to art school and am overly familiar with hipsters and all other breeds of art fags, and I do love me some puppies. I was prepared to LOL and merely MEHed. Single subject "clever" tumblrs are starting to rankle me as very few of them are actually all that funny and every single one of them has an air of TRYING TOO HARD.
