Messages of love emptiness, fear and emotional hunger from the Earth-Pig Born... Cerebus Valentines. (some drawings slightly risque but not quite NSFW)

Previous Dave Sims madness on MeFi, and the classic(?) mountain of ridiculous misogynistic outpouring here

I wouldn't mind some valentines of just Gerhard's work; his landscapes always make me feel insignificant.

What no "Inowpronounceusmarried"?

These are great.

At times like this I almost feel sorry for Dave Sims. And then I remember some of the crazy shit he's said and I feel better about it.

Is Sims still uber wealthy? I can't imagine the cerebus phonebooks are getting that many sales these days.

One of the problems with crazy is that it isn't always loving or nice. Sometimes the crazy things you think are hateful and mean.

These hilarious, though.

Listen... kid... Cerebus is in love with your wife.

Erp, sorry for the name pluralization typo. I always feel that it's too much crazy for just one Sim, there must have been a whole pack of them churning out the nuttiness.
posted by FatherDagon at 2:06 PM on February 12, 2010

I'm guilty too. Sims just sounds better.

I've always been into Cerebus but I didnt get it when I was 13 and I"m not sure I get it now.

Metafilter: I didn't get it when I was 13 and I'm not sure I get it now.

I do believe that link to Sims' previous is an excellent, text-book example of mansplaining.

the Valentine's Day on match day chorus = brilliant! :D

Not sure what happened there... normally I'd get it right.

Now I'm imagining ... it's the new MMORPG, coming in summer 2010 ... The DAVESims!

You can customize everything! Choose your daveSims personality From masculine, to hyper masculine! Is your character a man, or part of the homosexualist agenda?

I kid. I do respect the work, and I recognize that it would probably require a person to be insane in order to consecutively publish 300+ issues of a cartoon aardvark thing.
posted by Think_Long at 2:47 PM on February 12, 2010

Well, since it was a woman talking to an audience of mostly men, I don't think it was a particularly text-book example of mansplaining.

Please do not mix scenes from the old, good Cerebus comics with Sim's subsequent crazy. You're totally messing up my compartmentalization!

God, never post on an eternal Friday afternoon at work. Sorry if I came off dickish, y'all.

So awesome. Thanks.

It's quite alright, griphus. Coming off dickish is quite in the spirit of Mr. Sim's work.

Is Sims still uber wealthy? I can't imagine the cerebus phonebooks are getting that many sales these days.

He gave much of his uber-wealth away, for biblical reasons, leaving (from what I understand) enough to retire on. Of course, he still produces new work (Glamourpuss - JudenHass -JudenHass is even actually worth reading, Glamourpuss less so unless you are dead keen on the history of photorealism in comics and easy jokes about Cosmopolitan magazine), plus some other projects so he still has income, and, being a self-publisher, any monies from the phonebooks these are his, Gerhard having sold his 40% stake in Aardvark Vanaheim the publishing company in 2006 (though this vid from 2007 indicates they can still stand to be in the same room as each other).

All that is AFAIK. IA Not Sim's accountant.

Thank you so much for this link. And the comments in this thread. My boyfriend and I had a good laugh, and it was actually romantic, in a sucking-void kind of way.

Metafilter: Of all the essence-draining voids I've used to rationally gratify my needs for pleasure, you're one of the least unbearable, Valentine.

Umm. High Society is probably not the right source material for this... Cerebus' women troubles were entirely of his own making right up until the end of Church and State. Sim waited until after he told the story he wanted to tell before putting on his "syphillitic misogynist/repressed homosexual" schtick to fulfill his own prophecy. (Yes, I'm 90% certain it's a hoax and a put-on... and it worked. After 300 issues, Cerebus died alone, unmourned and unloved. One of the finest performance-art pieces ever created.)

They need to take scenes from "Mothers and Daughters" or "Guys" instead.

As emptiness, fear and emotional hunger go, these weren't bad, but I still prefer the "Bitter Sweet Heats" from the MST3K Invention Exchange @5:25.

I really don't know why, after everything this asshole has said, people still think I should read Cerebus. Maybe it's the best comic book in the word, but I'll never know, because Dave Sim gets none of my money and little of my attention. There are other comic books to read.

This is a strange way to start my day. I keep seeing the match day guys delivering all these comments in song.

The story arc from High Society to Church and State 2 is really great, and (with what happens to the Earth Pig at the end) has a fitting ending. Also some of the best illustration, panel work, and writing I've ever seen in a graphic novel.
