Giant anteater. Skiing Batmen. Knight stirring his his cappuccino. Red devils. Snow falling on the beards of face painted gourd toting evil spirit rebukers. CARNIVAL!

I still say the plural of Batman is Batmans, not Batmen.

2016 opening ceremonies should be amazing! And did anyone else think Girl in the Fireplace for #10?

Great post! I love the Big Picture. I even have it subscribed in google reader, and yet week after week, I forget to visit.

Every year Carnival makes me feel like everyone outside the US (except New Orleans) is having more fun with life than me.

Not just skiing Batmen. Skiing Batmen on a float.

A Carnival float.

A Carnival float in the Sambadrome.

(Afterwards I heard they had a three-legged jetpack race to Mt. Awesome.)

Big Picture omits all the classic rique outfits. If Big Picture lets me click on a warning to see mangled corpses and rivers of blood, it should damn well give the same treatment for nearly naked breasts.

Does Burning Man know about this?

You know, I've never thought about Carnival and Burning Man in the same frame, and I wonder if Carnival doesn't offer the same kind of outlet/hedge against boring normal life that Burning Man aspires to. Perhaps Carnival does it better since it is more or less acceptable to society writ large.

The plural of Batman is WestKeatons. If there's more they become WestKeatonKilmerClooneyBales.

@Burhanistan - I didn't omit the risque outfits out of prudishness, just using my editorial eye, the few photos I had available to use that were risque were either not great photos, didn't fit with the collection or format, or were a bit too blatant. I was actually hoping I might be able to use my nudity screen for a couple of photos here, but what I had at hand didn't lend itself to that.

Ah, my mistake. I assumed otherwise since the standard US editorial/censor model seems to be to allow gruesome violence but disallow nekkid people.

Interesting calendar fact that just occurred to me:

Ash Wednesday is a bit over 7 weeks before Easter.

Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring (usually).

Chinese New year is the second new moon after the winter solstice.

Therefore a good portion of the time, Chinese New Year will occur during Carnival.

Which is unsurprising, given that both celebrations are the lunar equivalent commemorations of the cross-quarter beginning of spring that is also marked on the solar calendar by Groundhog Day.

In Brazil, they most definitely are.

Carnival > Groundhog's Day.

It's interesting to see so many people having a good time without a single corporate logo in sight.

Glorious video of the Ramp-Skiing Batmans of the Sambadrome (quickly followed by the Wall-Crawling Spidey Squadron of the Sambadrome).

More info on the Sambadrome itself, including this glamorous panoramic image.

I posit that the Sambadrome is the best of all possible worlds.
