Jeez, Bison, you just got the gold medal in hockey today, isn't that enough?

This kind of Bond girl is far more realistic.

Aww, that portrait of Christa McAuliffe is sweet.

I was struck by the Christa McAuliffe portrait, too, smartyboots. Made me choke up a little bit.

Good stuff. Art, do you know this guy, or is he just on your comix radar?

They actually have regular rotating shows of aviation and space art, much of it what you would expect, at the Museum of Flight. These are well off the beaten path and there's an obvious connection to the joint in the subject matter. Not that I could say whether that would help or hurt, mind.

These are great, thank you. I love his style, in these and his other comics.

No Roberta Bondar?

Roberta, Roberta,
Roberta Lynn Bondar
Oh, how I long to wrap my
Canadarms around her.

Also, the Valentina Twist.

love the style! but shannon lucid is all wrong...her hair is much much bigger and much much crazier...at least it was on her record-breaking trip to mir...

Am...am I the only person who saw the "XX" in the title of this post and expected a very different sort of drawing?

No? Just me?

All right. I'll be in the corner thinking about what I did.

Born in Shanghai to missionary parents, Shannon Lucid...

When she was up in the Mir for 6 months, her name came up on the radio when I was with my mom once. My mom just casually mentioned "oh yeah, Shannon Lucid. she lived with grandma and grandpa for a while in high school1. parents were missionaries." and I was all WHAAAAAA!?

1Except from Wikipedia it looks like it wouldn't have been HS. I don't remember the details now. My grandparents knew every single human being on Earth at one point.

I guess I am glad there are too many to draw... or maybe the series is not complete.

( Where's Eileen Collins ?! )

fearfulsymmetry, I was also struck by the grimness of Sullivan's expression. I think she could be trusted with orbital bombardment equipment as well.

These were great. Made me want to watch Planetes again. (Of course, most anything space-related makes me want to do that...)

Buggered off to US comics and other bigger, better things before my time.

Now I really have a crush.

Oh come on, those aren't really female astronauts! Everyone who's read SF magazines knows from the covers that female astronauts wear skin-tight spacesuits and have huge gazongas. Also for some reason they need to be carried places by robots and aliens. Must be those tiny ankles.

Seriously though, the reality is so much better than the fiction- I'm hoping this will inspire some more kids to go into the hard sciences.

Mr Bad Example? I totally expected that, too. What a refreshing surprise!
And ditto to what happyroach said.

Very Cool.
Distinct lack of Mae Jemison

(checks wikipedia list of female astronauts)

um, Nevermind.

Seems to be an encouraging number of female astronauts!

I'd love to see what R. Crumb would do with this assignment.

Crumb's astronauts wouldn't fit in suits!

I'm sure NASA could find a way to let out the seat if that's what it takes to keep things A-OK for our women in space!
