Gay blood donation dilemma may become moot

Do MeFi posts influence US Senators? We just had two contentious Meta threads, one in AskMe, followed by a rapidly derailed MeTa, on the dilemma faced by gay men who wish to donate blood. With striking timeliness, 16 US Senators have sent a letter to the FDA, calling for revision of the standard.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Maybe just drop a note in the still-open Metatalk thread? This post is 75% metafilter and 25% letter without any indication of the import or effect of the whole thing; if there's an interesting post to be made about what happens, maybe make it then? -- cortex

Well, I'm a senator, but I didn't sign that letter, so I'm going to say 'no.'

This post is kind of recursive, but I like to think that the senators are secret MeFites, along with all the really cool celebrities.

shouldn't this be in MetaTalk?

Now can we have a contentious thread about the lack of Swedish gymnasts in my rec room?

What is that thing called, confirmation bias?

I wouldn't be surprised if some Hill staffers are MeFites. And staffers are always looking to Feed the Beast (i.e. generate activity for their boss), so this one would be easy peasy.

Also, yeah, probably better for MetaTalk...

That thing where people are injected with gay blood against their will? That's called Obamacare.

My friend emailed me a cat video a day after I saw it on Metafilter! Is Metafilter fueled by Meow Mix?

Surely I'm not the only one who clicked through to read an article about how MetaFilter had been responsible for inspiring these Senators to try to change the policy, and now feels short-changed... Not what it says on tin.

I'm also a senator, but not that kind of senator, if you know what I mean. <wink> <wink>

I can't wait to hear the discourse on this issue. I can't wait to hear someone call it "political correctness gone too far!"

I like to think that the senators are secret MeFites, along with all the really cool celebrities.

When Craig Ferguson had that audience-free episode with Stephen Fry and they started talking about Twitter, internet discourse levels and such, I had my fingers crossed they'd admit to being MeFites. No such luck.

Do MeFi posts influence doctors without borders?

The consensus is generally no, not really.
