Okay, I'm not really, like, offended by this, but yea: Immaturely sexualizing women for the sake of breast cancer awareness is not okay.
Immaturely sexualizing women is only okay within a relationship or an art installation. posted by The Devil Tesla at 5:37 PM on March 8, 2010 [1 favorite]

How about saying "breast cancer" for the sake of being immaturely sexual? posted by DU at 5:47 PM on March 8, 2010
I don't see how this is sexualizing women at all. The breast honking in the video represents self breast exams. Self breast exams in relation to detecting cancer lumps aren't a sexual act. The tone of the video is light hearted (except the end) but that doesn't make it immature. posted by MaryDellamorte at 5:48 PM on March 8, 2010 [1 favorite]
Is breast cancer 100 times more common than any other type of cancer? If not, why do I see 100 times more awareness campaigns for breast cancer than any other cancer? posted by diogenes at 6:04 PM on March 8, 2010 [2 favorites]
I dunno, diogenes...do you really want to see a video of men getting prostate exams, complete with honking noise?
hmm, actually... posted by davejay at 6:11 PM on March 8, 2010

Who the hell actually gets to read Metafilter and watch Youtube videos at work? Is everyone else here somebody's boss or something? posted by dunkadunc at 6:12 PM on March 8, 2010 [1 favorite]
Gosh, I wonder what hilarious sound effect goes with prostate cancer awareness? posted by tula at 6:16 PM on March 8, 2010
"Is everyone else here somebody's boss or something?"...
Well, it "sexualizes women" only insofar as women touching their own breasts is inherently and overtly sexual. It's interesting, because as a guy I tend feel as though it is, but when I think about it I know it's not. In fact, I am the one sexualizing the situation by feeling as though women who touch their breasts in any context - silly, goofy, or medical contexts included - are 'sexual.'
I am a guy, so I know what that's like. Those of us who are into women tend to turn female breasts into this sacred zone of pleasure or something, fetishizing what is for women simply a body part. Women, well... they live with breasts, so I think it's healthy to understand that for them they're not really such a huge deal. But I say that as someone who has had the revelation of living with four women (and two men) for the last month, two of whom are lesbians. Hearing "your boobs look fantastic today!" and "oh, your breast is sticking out - here, let me help you with that" was strange and novel to me at first, and some stubborn part of me said that it's unfair that I'll never get to say things like that! But it's not really a big deal - mostly I kind of like the idea of people being comfortable inside their own skin. And I know that the notion that breasts are sexual objects! can be oppressive to women at a certain point. At the very least, it makes for a more rigid and less comfortable world. posted by koeselitz at 6:20 PM on March 8, 2010 [7 favorites]
Nice comment, koeselitz. I guess I was maybe less cool with this ad because of my gay, and because of the fact that breast honking is often used sexually, but yea, I probably overreacted. posted by The Devil Tesla at 6:40 PM on March 8, 2010 [1 favorite]

I... what? I have not frequently encountered breast honking, but when I have, it's been in the context of playful cuddling intimacy, girls having a laugh, or a toddler embarrasing his mum.
Before the serious bit, the feel of this for me was just "tee hee! boobies!". Silly and innocent, not sexual, not in the least. posted by bethnull at 7:39 PM on March 8, 2010
Find it offensive? This is nothing! The Carol Baldwin (yes, Alec's Mom) Breast Cancer Research Fund actually PRODUCED T-shirts that said "Save The Boobies!" in huge pink letters. They were all over the New York State Fair, invariably worn by slack-bellied guys in mullets or worse, KIDS. AND another local fundraiser used the slogan "Saving First Base". Talk about objectification of women... posted by kinnakeet at 7:44 AM on March 9, 2010
