Galactica: Sabotage is a shot-by-shot remake of the Beastie Boys' Sabotage video, using footage from Battlestar Galactica. Here's a side-by-side comparison.

Great in concept but the exectuion could use work. The continuity jumps make it harder to follow than Lost.

The Galactica title swoosh almost saved it, though!

I just wanted to chime in and say that that song never gets old.

split-screen was particularly involving, though I'd prefer 3D IMAX

that was exactly what that thing should be: kind of awesome.

Mashups are almost always less than their parts, much less the sum of their parts. Still, a worthy attempt.

Fracking sweet. I miss BSG.

I'm sorry.

No mustache, no raves from me. Nothing can beat the original. E for Effort?

Two things that were once great, that each rehashed themselves over and over trying to find the magic again, together at last!

This is more of the newfangled Battlestar Galactica than I had seen before, but that hardly matters, because Sabotage! is awesome enough for two. Bravo.

How cool. Tangential BSG music-related question: I was just considering a purchase of one of Battlestar's season soundtracks but couldn't figure out which one was the best. Any recommendations?

Rag tag fugitive fleet. Does it get any better than that?

Definitely a lot of free time for someone to put that together. But I have to admit that it was pretty good! I forgot how cheesy some of the Battlestar sets and space scenes were, but I still miss that show.

I saw BSG all the way through once. I mostly enjoyed it, despite the stupid religious deus-ex-machina bullcrap and the large amount of throwaway episodes that went around in circles faster than Deep Space Nine, but really... wasn't that supposed to be enough?!

Really, the only thing BSG -related that I really enjoy watching over and over again is this.

(Now Battleship Beastie... that I'd have to watch.)

There is no part of this that is not awesome. Except for the last few seasons.

Galactica: Sabotage ... is a good title for a combined Season 3 and 4 collected DVD/BluRay boxset.

And still I was expecting it to be with footage from the original BSG...

This is good, but it's no Han Solo, P.I. (Side-by-side).

I predict that this won't be on YouTube for long.

Someone should do a video where it starts with the first few seconds of this, and then switches to old Battlestar Galactica footage and Radio Radio.

No! Battlestar Galatica! I don't want to re-watch your first season!

But think of the exciting action! The fine acting! The tense plotting!

No! I know it all falls apart in the end and nothing makes sense! There is no resolution!

Who needs resolution! Enjoy your favorite characters again! Spppaaaaaaace!

*sobbing, loading DVD* I ...hate...myself. *play*

Zonker, I've never seen Magnum, P.I., but that was awesome.

Good chuckles in the magnum/solo side-by-side. Very good. Well done.

That Han Solo P.I. was much better. Thanks for that!

I am at work, so no watching the video just yet. However (like casting Christina Hendricks as Ginger in a Gilligan's Island movie) the very idea of this is so damn perfect that I am hereby proclaiming this totally awesome! and the best MeFi post ever

First, how did they get through so many seasons of Galactica without a single scene of people running down stairs?

Anyway, I watched it solo first and then side-by-side and the side-by-side version seems so much better because the scenes are so similar in composition versus the original. But overall the remake lacks a narrative arc (irony!) that the original had and as such doesn't really work by itself.

But, that aside, AWESOME. The actual Galactica intro screen should have used those graphics.

This just reminded me of the old MTV ad with the very confused cabbie who thought that Sabotage was an actual TV show and wanted to know when it was on so he could watch it. To my delight, it is on Youtube.

This is just reminding me about how BSG should have wrapped after the escape from Concentration Camp Planet and left all the other mumbo jumbo unresolved. Another day, another awesome product of the bored and obsessed.

Oh man, remember when the Chief had a beard? And the show had a plot? Good times, good times.

Pretty sweet! However, since the Kleptones' last album came out, the original version of Sabotage always seems to me like something's missing.

I love the Beastie Boys. They're either the shittiest great band ever or the greatest shitty band ever, but they are always good times.

Tangentially related is the mash-up between "Sabotage" and "Star Wars" (self-link)

Great song and comparison video.
posted by MechEng at 7:49 AM on March 11, 2010

The brilliance is really only fully apparent in the side by side, because you can see that the editor who put this all together sometimes went for similarly framed shots (people standing in such a way as to resemble the characters in the video) or other times chose thematically close ideas (someone running down the stairs vs someone rappelling).

But for sheer hell-yeah-ness, I have to love the credits.

Nicely done.
