The instincts of the mother are strong across species, indeed. Go mama duck. Btw, this story pretty much kills the credability of whoever-it-was's argument in whichever-thread-it-was about animals losing children and not really caring much about it, doesn't it?

How did all 8 ducklings fall down the grate? I have a picture in my head of the mother walking over it, and the ducklings, all in a line behind her, come walking along, and suddenly *plop* (7 left) *plop* (6 left) *plop* (5 left) *plop* (4) *plop* (3) *plop* (2) *plop* (1) *plop* (0)!

When I was young, my family raised ducks, chickens, geese, and rabbits for food (we were po'). One weekend, early in the season (when all the birds were still young), we went camping. When we returned, we discovered Mocha -- our 150 pound Newfoundland/Wolf mix bitch sitting in the middle of our back yard, fighting with one of the neighborhood dogs. On closer inspection, we saw that she was sitting on a bunch of little chicks, defending them from being eaten. Apparently, one of us kids had left the door to the chicken run ajar, and the little guys had escaped. Pretty bad news in a neighborhood full of bloodthirsty hunting dogs. Anyway, I just bring this up to underscore the ability of an animal to be compassionate.

Ducks don't quack all that much unless they're in a large group. Most ducks just grunt to themselves as they mosey around eating worms.

I like ducks, jpoulos. They are very tasty. There was a large park built in Omaha's downtown in the '80s (Central Park Mall). The city's park division stocked the large pond with ducks. They all disappeared. The park division brought some more ducks in. They too disappeared. Turns out some members of the homeless community were having duck dinners pretty regularly. The city stopped importing the ducks after a while. I know if I were living on the streets, I would certainly eat those ducks.

Funny how none of those ducks went to the police when they noticed their friends rapidly disappearing. I guess Canadian ducks must just be smarter than their American counterparts.
