Oh this game, holy shit. If you really get into it, it's much easier if you own a gamepad. Glad to see it's finding a wider audience.

La Mulana is coming to WiiWare too, but there's no release date yet.

I'm going to hold off on getting the Wii version, because if I do buy it, I'm going to throw my Wiimore as hard as I can into my TV after inevitably attempting and horribly failing at the Hell level for ten hours straight.

man, I feel like I've been hearing about this game for forever, except I know nothing about it. I had no idea it was freeware and multiplatform. Now I am going to download it. And then I will play it.

Half (?) of Nicalis is, of course, Nicklas Nygren, aka Nifflas.

He's made some awesome free platform games of his own: Knytt Stories (previously), Knytt (previously), and - my personal favourite - Within a Deep Forest. All of them are fully recommended.

(There's also Saira, but I've not played that yet. It's not free [boo], but on Steam [yay].)

No shit? Cave Story is coming out for WiiWare? Man, if you've never played this game, PLAY IT. It's easily the best independent platformer ever made. It rivals SMB3, it's that good. I've never been able to beat the final boss, though, but I'll give it another try on WiiWare.

There are also versions for PSP and Nintendo DS if I remember correctly. I've played the PSP one.

I think the best thing about the Wii is that, once you get past the novelty of the motion detection stuff, it's basically just a souped up NES. It's not so much tailored for "casual gamers" as it is for old-school ones: Bricky puzzle games, sidescrolling platformers, and fighty button-mashers abound. (Let's just not mention the other 90%, the cutesy kiddie crap that lines the walls of every brick-and-mortar retailer, m'kay?)

I think, since they introduced the Virtual Console, Nintendo has steadily been moving in the right direction: Backwards.

I am going to buy Cave Story, and I am going to play the hell out of it.

I'm enjoying your running commentary, shmegegge!

If anybody else reading this hasn't played the game, please, DO SO BEFORE READING FURTHER. This is a game that can be spoiled and, while I trust MetaFilter more than a lot of the internet, I'd hate to see the game's unexpected twists unveiled prematurely for people who haven't encountered them yet.

Yes, this is correct. Exactly correct. And just wait until Super Meat Boy hits ... (yes, it's on Xbox Live, too, but good luck playing it on that d-pad.)

I heard about this game probably almost a year ago, but heard that there would be a Wii version at the same time and thought it would be better on a big TV with a game pad. So I waited and waited, and it got delayed and delayed. I almost broke, but it looks like I made it.

The Lunchbox might actually be my favorite part of this game. Hard to say, though. There are a lot of things to like.

I'm really curious to see how well this works on the Wii. The PC version's chunky graphics and sound were a big part of its style, and moving from one platform to another can affect a game in unexpected ways. This version's supposed to have a variety of little extra additions, too. I'm eager to play it!

posted by shmegegge at 6:58 AM on March 22, 2010

A trick: If you run forward while firing the fireball gun, all the fireballs roll together in a lump, making them one huge firey ball of death that will kill anything instantly, except a boss.
posted by shmegegge at 7:49 AM on March 22, 2010

I hate to do that thing people do in reviews, where they say "it's like [thing x] meets [thing y]." I think it's reductive, and if the game is good, then there's more to it than a simple x+y mind meld. However, I need to say that I'm getting a strong "Metroid meets Earthbound" vibe from this game. And I mention that because they're not two things that necessarily go together, except that this game has done a remarkable job of combining the gameplay of Metroid with the tone and quirkiness of Earthbound. It's a pretty mean feat, and this game is all sorts of awesome.

also, I haz Charcoal, Jelly and Gum Base now. Watch out rusty doors.

Some of my best friends are little blobs of pixels.

The rest are 3d avatars in Outside, that old game which got lukewarm reviews, but which some friends and I really like!

Just fired up the game on my Wii.. it's looking great! I especially like that you can choose to use original music OR original graphics, or new versions of each, separately. So if you want the new graphics with the old music, you can do that. Mix and match! Plus there is no better control than the good ol' Nintendo pad. Wow I'm in love.. if you have a Wii, pick this up! Lots of extra modes too.
posted by ReeMonster at 12:30 PM on March 22, 2010

On the other hand, Gideon Zhi's localization has so much more charm and nuance. The sentence-construction in the Wii version ranges from unexceptional to awful. It's just more evidence of the truth that Cave Story embodied in the first place: that the stuff people make out of love and give away for free have a capacity for greatness unmatched by mere merchandise.

Okay, actually, the dogs are my favorite part. Check each one out in your inventory!

Latest Cave Story Wii problems: the map screen shows a corrupted image in certain areas every time I use it. This is hardly game-breaking, but it seems like the sort of thing a year and a half of quality testing should have taken care of.

Ok I just did nothing but play this game for the past two days.
I deliberately didn't read this thread first, because of spoiler fear, and...I did not get a tow rope. Oh god. It was when I noticed that

+++++spoilers++++++

I think I was actually firing her GHOST out of the Blade, that I totally lost it. Also I don't have a couple of the guns and I don't think I am ever going to be able to beat the final boss but I am going to keep trying till I either do it, or keel over, because damnit I have to save these little mouse robot human rabbit...things.

Also...did that one mouse robot human rabbit thing say "Doctor Dumb can go screw himself"? God I love this game.
