Thank God, I have increasingly needed an application just like this so I can ascertain when I am smiling. Without it how would I know? posted by smoke at 3:26 AM on March 24, 2010 [1 favorite]

is there an Auto Middle Finger available?
(not that I'd like to employ it here...just asking) posted by orme at 4:20 AM on March 24, 2010
Why does the face almost always lean to it's right so the eyes are to the left? :-) or :-(
This one doesn't seem quite as happy (-: This one seems more gruff than sad. )-:
Maybe not. I wonder if it's just by convention. Is there a reason for this or should I make one up? posted by vapidave at 4:24 AM on March 24, 2010
Vapidave: I know left handed people who type emoticons leaning to the left. Works just as well really. posted by charles kaapjes at 4:28 AM on March 24, 2010
if you write from right to left, that signifies solidarity with the arabs. posted by UbuRoivas at 4:29 AM on March 24, 2010
I don't care about the technology, but I found it wonderfully funny watching the guy try and keep a straight face while demonstrating the programme. Damn you smiley face! Damn you straight to hell.
Whoa, that MPT (Machine Perception Toolbox) looks potentially amazing. I had no idea something like this was available open source. I wonder what I can use that for.... posted by DU at 5:05 AM on March 24, 2010
I want a program that will detect when people are about to send me emoticons and administer a mild shock to them before they can do so. I feel this will be a great benefit to society. It will also record their startled cries and set them to a nice back beat, so art!, too.... posted by GenjiandProust at 5:20 AM on March 24, 2010 [3 favorites]
If the title graphic's promise of a Smalls/Astley/Spears/bin Laden mashup had been fulfilled, that would have really been something. posted by Joe Beese at 5:34 AM on March 24, 2010

I'm sorry, but Theo is absolutely charming. I love how he's cracking himself up on email. And that he made a script to automatically share smiling. posted by iamkimiam at 7:02 AM on March 24, 2010
In case anyone else tried opening this link on a BlackBerry or other mobile phone this morning and couldn't, it's a link to a page with an embedded Vimeo video. posted by zarq at 7:08 AM on March 24, 2010
That one just checks to see if you're already smiling. Meh.

if it detects a smile it sends the the ascii smiley face letters “:)” as keyboard presses to the front most application. This is neat and pointed me to the openFramework project which is nifty-nerdy in its own right. To all the haters I say :-P
