Appletite for Destruction
April 7, 2010 6:52 AM   Subscribe

iPad is having a hard time keeping it together. Whether in attempts to be funny, a stress test or a useful teardown, the iPad gets it. One is excessively violent, maybe reflecting the decline of civilization. Or is Apple merely getting comeuppance for its DRM policy? According to the most famous smasher, at least it's neither Apple hate nor iPad blue. [Warning: all links feature seriously damaged iPads.]

This post was deleted for the following reason: Eh, we're really pushing the limit on the Yet Another iPad Thread thing and this isn't fabulous or anything. Maybe toss these into that in-dash iPad thread from the other day. -- cortex

Immature people exist everywhere. Some even make it to adulthood. And they will continue to destroy that which they don't like, out of spite, ignorance, or foolishness. This is nothing new. Hulk smash!

I remember people buying and then smashing the XBox 360, PS3 and probably other highly-anticipated new gadgets. So not only is it stupid and immature, it's completely unoriginal. Plus, whether you use and enjoy it or smash it to make your totally edgy culture-jamming social statement, APPLE STILL GETS YOUR MONEY, DIPSHIT.

A day without a Metafilter FPP built around Apple's latest product is like a day without sunshine.

Are any of these actually social statements? I'm pretty sure what's going on here is simply a public demonstration of wealth. So, yawn.

People are saying I must hate Apple for doing this. Not even," 19-year-old Justin Kockott tells the LA Times.

"We still have two other iPads, plus my family has iPhones, Macs and iPods. I do not at all hate Apple. I love Apple, actually."

The reason for the YouTube stunt, he reveals, was for him and his friends to the first people on the planet to break the much-hyped tablet.

Oh, so you're just kind of a really wealthy dick. I guess that's okay.

Ah, there's nothing like slipping in an un related jab about Apple and DRM in between links to smashed iPads, especially when there is already ,a thread about the Jesus Device.

What a waste of useful technology. Why not donate these to a school where they could be put to use?

didn't we just have a "break the iPad" thread like yesterday or some such? in a blender?

Thanks for the warning text. I saw that Brit 'comedian' tee off on one (literally) and had a flash of nerdrage.

I refer you to shitmydadsays: "Son, no one gives a shit about all the things your [iPad] does. You didn't invent it, you just bought it. Anybody can do that."

Those who can't do teach.
Those who can't teach teach gym.
Those who can't teach gym smash expensive things in impotent rage over their inability to do anything productive in life, save for hastening the destructive power of entropy.

How much money can a person realistically make if their video goes viral on youtube (through embedded ads I mean)?

They do it for the publicity and internet fame.
Posts like this help give them exactly what they want.

This is why people hate our freedom! Because we smash things that others can't even afford.

(I use the term "hate our freedom" with some irony, however, i really can't stand people destroying things that cost more than my part of the monthly rent)

You know those scenes in cartoons where the fat, wealthy villain sits around burning money just for the heck of it? Because he's an asshole? Yeah.

What a waste of useful technology.

That is the point! This is conspicuous consumption, coupled with the transgressive thrills of breaking a popular lust object.

There's a lot of what seems like actual hatred and outrage in this thread.

Whatever puerile point each of these people is trying to make individually, collectively they've made a rather powerful one: lots of folks here actually care what happens to these devices, a lot more than I would have thought. Go marketing, I guess.

I don't think this post is really ripping on Apple, but here's the thing about people that do - they're far, far more preoccupied with hating Apple than they say we are with loving them, which is ostensibly the reason they hate Apple in the first place. It's like, I say, "boy I sure like my Mac, and my iPhone is really cool too", and then they reply "HA HA YOU IDIOT I PAID HALF AS MUCH FOR MY RANDOM COLLECTION OF TAIWANESE JUNK THAT SOUNDS LIKE A JET ENGINE TAKING OFF (well, they wouldn't say that), YOU ELITIST, YOU FOLLOWER, YOU CONFORMIST!", and like, I'm the cultist. But whatever.

Well, I flagged it for the godawful editorializing in it, which has literally nothing to do with the rest of links. Seriously, who cares if you hate Apple? GYOFB.

DecemberBoy: I'm not really an Apple hater, but I honestly did pay 1/2 as much for a non apple MP3, OGG player 8 years ago that sounds good, has 30 GB storage and still works with the original battery.

The only thing I have against some Apple users is the willingness to run and buy the latest version gadget when what they have still works great... of course that is not something exclusive to Apple users.

Putting an non-functional, "buy stuff from us and only us" kiosk device into a blender seems kind of redundant. It's already fundamentally broken, this just makes the body look ugly.

Just because you say it (whether about Apple "haters" or about atheists) doesn't make it true.

Really? I'm not taking that away from these comments at all.

This is more what I'm taking away from the comments here and from all of the stupid smash the iPad GRAR videos. Pointless attention-seeking is not really all that fascinating anymore, although many people obviously still think it is.

Last year we gave $10-15,000 to the Make a Wish Foundation (my little sister is sick). It's not like we're greedy, it's not like we did it to rub it in and say, "We have the money, oh look at us."

No, it's like you (or, more accurately, your parents) did that one token charitable thing and thought that doing it was a free pass to do whatever stupid shit you wanted to do in life.

If book burnings are a social statement why wouldn’t the intentional destruction of a designed object be?

Note I also wonder about the book burning situation, I mean the publisher got your money anyway right? It’s not like they can’t print another one.
