I think this will confuse children and make them think that Mammoths and dinosaurs co-existed. Will no one think of the children!

That mammoth toy is pretty ferocious looking, though....

> "Additional notes: Among several Finnish children's metal and hard rock bands..."

This blows my mind. The U.S. has "I love you, you love me...", while Finland is teaching their kids the power of rocking the fuck out. We may as well lie down and give up now, because in fifteen years those kids are going to grow up and destroy the world with power chords.

This is excellent.

Being a huge fan of metal, I thought I was going to dislike it at first for not being abrasive and aggressive which are qualities of good metal bands. The most important quality for any good metal band is to have a sense of humor about itself, and bands who do not are usually really shitty.

This stuff is directly complementary to the tongue-in-cheek aesthetic of metal. It is cute, funny, and has all the right intentions.

This is so much more tolerable than Christian rock of any kind, I found this particular comparison interesting.

Don't worry, ardgedee -- Canada's got our back.

and yes I *did* buy it and play those songs for my kids when they were infants, and now at four and a half they are intelligent, polite, have expansive vocabularies, and know how to rock out on our drum kit -- coincidence? I think not!

Even the dinosaurs are epic!? Are there any ways in which Finland is less cool than other countries? I can't think of any.

Do folks over there actually take their kids to this stuff though? Or is just a crazy novelty for the internet?

I thought my dino-obsessed 2 year old would love this, but now I don't think so. Why are they fronted by Bowser?

I clicked the links hoping it would be a little tiny bit more serious, but I wholeheartedly agree with delivering power metal to children. Love it.

I'm reserving judgement until the band gets involved in a Mayhem-esque rumor where the vocalist Herra Hevisaurus commits suicide and guitarist Riffi Raffi is accused of eating Herra upon discovery.

Next question, will the Finnish press publish pictures of the dinosaurs w/out costumes, and if they do, will the Finnish kiddies freak out?

Your favorite dinosaur-costumed heavy metal band su.....

Oh the hell with it.

That was actually pretty cool.

America is way behind the curve with children's entertainment--even KISS has a children's TV show in the works in Canada.

As a MeFinn (although not living in Finland any more), this is making me feel all warm and fuzzy and a little headbangy.

Yeah, from what I've heard, their album Jurahevin kuninkaat - Kings of Jurassic Metal - got good reviews and made it to #25 on the national chart last year. They're touring all over the place and are a raging hit among the 2-12 age group.

What can I say, Finns are a nation of metal heads. All the parents I know back home would have no problem with their preschoolers rocking out to songs like Haloo Haloo. (You'll find the English translation of the lyrics there, too.)

Here's their official website, btw.

The internet tells me the musicians are mostly former or current members of Thunderstone.

Okay, these guys are one of the best things to come from Finland and are a lot better than all these "edgy" bands they were exporting at some point. Their europower metal (or at least the four songs I listened to) are of good quality and I'd like to give the album a listen if I find it somewhere. I just listened to Jee Hevisaurus and I now feel a weird urge to listen to some Magnum. Great post.

And I'm a guy who'll be traveling across Europe to go to a festival with bands like Jarboe & Eyehategod.

You think so? They may get the poses from School of Rock, but all they need can be found in these two short videos: One Two. Jack Black is today's most important Rock Educator in America.

I wanted to make a dig at the Jonas brothers, which I then dismissed as low-hanging fruit. When I searched for Metal by Numbers, I saw I had typed "metal by brothers". Heh.

Metal may have originated in the UK and USA, but no one ever got the right idea about it until it hit the frozen North. They might as well have invented metal (and power metal specifically) because it's so completely theirs now.

After watching "Viimeinen mammutti", Hevisaurus are now my favorite band. Man, this is the coolest kid thing I may have ever seen. It's got all the attention-grabbing of American kids' TV shows of the guy-in-giant-suit variety, but none of the condescending inanity. I wish I had kids so I could enjoy this with them.

"Viimeinen mammutti", by the way, means "The Last Mammoth". Awww! Because she's got the little stuffed mammoth!

The thing is, my daughter's favourite songs since before she was two are Republica's "Ready to Go", and Iggy Pop's "The Passenger" and "Real Wild Child." She, as she puts it, "Likes it loud, daddy." Other songs she's requested by name include "Parry City", and she likes some Black Album era Metallica.

(Granted, she prefers to sing 50s rock and roll - Elvis, Buddy Holly, et al, but the above is what she likes to listen to.)

Kids' music in English is a far cry from her tastes. It's nice to see there's at least somewhere in the world she'd get better catered to.
