Yeah when we used to play it on the NES, we totally never had to adjust the TV's volume or anything. Totally ruins the experience.

I was just playing this. I think Contra Guy has the advantage - with the spread gun you pretty much just annihilate every block and dude who comes your way. But I was disappointed in the Link mechanics — I was expecting to be able to walk right up into the sky. It's really Adventure of Link mechanics isn't it? But no ducking?

So what's really interesting here:

Because of how closely I recall each of the playable character's actual games on the NES, I cannot get myself to jump on shit with them -- Samus or Blue Contra Dude or Link got hurt when they touched stuff, Mario was unique in his ability to jump on dudes.

It honestly didn't even occur to me that I could jump on people until like level 5. So the real question is: is jumping on stuff one of Mario's powers? Or is it a unique physiological flaw of enemies in Mario's world? Also Im high

Or is it a unique physiological flaw of enemies in Mario's world?

The Mushroom Kingdom has low gravity, and as a result most organisms which can jump can jump very high. Unfortunately, this also leads to physiological structures being less robust.

I was expecting a fairly lame game on the other end of this link, it's not like this idea hasn't been done before in a slip-shod manner, and was surprised to find out that the programmer knows his stuff. For the most part each character's physics is accurately modeled, and those cases where it isn't (Simon's double-jump, Mega Man's jump height) it is obviously a concession to play. And there are some surprising little touches; the hidden coins in the big room before Bowser in 1-4, for instance, which relatively few people know about, are there.

In short, I approve.

Sigh. This is the second time in as many days that I've pointed a Complainy McSoundstooloud to external volume controls. (It's down there.)

For some reason, on my computer, Flash likes to play considerably louder than anything else I use. The lack of volume control is disappointing.

The game itself is kind of clever, but homogenizes a lot of the characters. Mario jumps on things. That's what he does. Giving that power to every other character unbalances it. Also, as noted above, wrong Link.

Contra Guy is definitely the badass of the bunch.

Also, seems to be a flaw with Samus not being able to jump high enough to get past certain points. I picked him and re-entered a level on the 3rd stage at the halfway point, and couldn't get past the first tube I encountered. Luckily the music was awesome enough that I was able to entertain myself by running back and forth and making bombs go off until I died from lack of time.

Brilliant... this would entirely change the game into a huge puzzle. Assuming it's possible. No jumping, just clever use of the bionic arm to get all the way through SMB. Someone needs to make this.

chococat: Man, I know a certain Metroid/Mario/Zelda-obsessed 8 year-old-boy that I won't be able to get off the computer in about half an hour when school is done.

I think it's awesome that there are kids who weren't born during the 8-bit era who are playing these games. It reminds me of watching Game Center CX and seeing Arino schooled by a little kid who's an expert at Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japanese version), even though the game was released in the late 80s.

True story: Last year I was wandering a local Play N Trade looking at their lacklustre wares, and to my surprise and delight a kid, probably about ten years old, came in and started asking the clerk about NES shooters! The guy behind the counter was clueless, so I went over to the kid and pointed him to a one-dollar ZANAC cartridge, telling him, "You want this one. You won't be disappointed."

Gives me hope for the future, it does.

Sadly it isn't possible, off the top of my head there are a couple of long jumps in 8-1 that would be completely impossible, and most of the "treetop" levels are also obvious barriers.

(What kind of coincidence is it that I'd write my previous comment in such close proximity to someone with "naju" as a user name?)

Never finished Metroid, eh?

Actually, in the ORIGINAL Metroid, you had to beat the game in a certain amount of time to learn that Samus is female, otherwise she just stood there in her suit without removing the helmet. However, they've made umpteen games since then where she's clearly female from the beginning.

I feel a bit like an ass for being disappointed in the Mario physics; multi-coin boxes don't behave authentically (number of coins available should be dependent on speed of box-hitting), and Mario's running speed doesn't fall off at the same rate as it does in his games.
Hey, just ot let you know, supermariocrossover.com is hosting this game against the creator's wishes. From the creator's commentary on the original place the game was uploaded:

Jesus Christ! I just made this game for fun and didn't expect it to be so popular. People are putting it all over the Internet. It is strange that other people are making money off of my non-profit fan game. For the record, Newgrounds was the website the game debuted on and is the only website that I will update with bug fixes. The only official website for the game is exploding-rabbit.com. Anything else is not my doing. People are free to put the game wherever they want, although I'd rather they not just do it to make money off of their own ads.

There is one website, supermariocrossover.com, that I'd like to get taken down because a lot of people think it's the official site. If anyone knows how to make that happen, please PM me or take action yourself. And one more thing, the official name for the game is "Super Mario Bros. Crossover," but I couldn't fit the title. The title is not Super Mario Crossover.

I appreciate all of the awesome feedback but I'm a bit overwhelmed by everything and can't get back to everyone. I will do bug fixes periodically, but please understand that it is incredibly difficult to get a game this massive to be perfect, especially when I did everything myself.

And for the record, my name is Jay Pavlina, I'm the creator of the game, and I love you all for playing it. Thank you so much for everything. Just keep playing and having fun. If you want to stay updated on my work and the game, including possible expanded versions or sequels, you can go to my website. Thank you. I am so happy you all are playing and enjoying it. :)

For answers to questions that everyone is asking, you can read an interview at:

Just to make ShawnStruck's link a little easier to get to.

Also, this game's a good reminder of how my Mario skills have decayed since I was younger. Been trying to play Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World lately as well, and I. Am. Bad. at them.

Dandeson, you should really get together with a friend and play some New Super Mario Bros. Wii co-op with 'em and then you won't have to worry about being friends with them anymore.

I saw a four-player co-op Let's Play of New Super Mario Brothers Wii. I think that if you don't have the attitude they had about it (specifically, drinking beers and not caring if your character lives or dies), it'd be an even worse friendship killer than Illuminati.

Fortunately, this is the attitude I bring to all my video-game playing.
