I like them! But my brain is having a hard time reconciling image macros with interesting typography. posted by danb at 5:39 AM on May 18, 2010 [3 favorites]
I love the "Epic Baptism" one. A lot of these kind of suck though. posted by delmoi at 5:44 AM on May 18, 2010 [1 favorite]

Well, that explains where the flowers picture came from. posted by ZeusHumms at 5:48 AM on May 18, 2010 [3 favorites]
I like the one with the flowers. It's probably not a good sign that he's already started to repeat some of the captions. posted by kirkaracha at 5:48 AM on May 18, 2010
These are great - sucks there are only 23. UHHHHHHHHHH is great, and even the repeat of haters gonna hate is still funny. posted by cashman at 5:50 AM on May 18, 2010
Locals from Szenna celebrate Easter with a traditional "watering of the girls", a fertility ritual rooted in Hungarian tribes' pre-Christian past...
Wow.
I don't get the "hipsters start your photocopiers" anti-war photo. The facial hair? posted by DU at 5:52 AM on May 18, 2010

Hipsters are just copying the hippies.
Really though, I'm so sick of hipster bashing hipsters that I've begun self-identifying as a hipster--and I moved out of Williamsburg last year FFS! posted by johnnybeggs at 6:02 AM on May 18, 2010
Wait...funny captions on pictures??? Why hasn't anyone EVER thought of this BEFORE?!?!?! posted by briank at 6:11 AM on May 18, 2010
I like photos. I like typography. And I do not like this site.
Way to ruin some decent photos, smartasses!*

So I first see these images on the Big Picture and they are tragic and moving (the tragic and moving ones, at least). Then I see them again on the Big Caption and they are used for teh funny - and it is pretty funny.
Maybe it's my lack of comic timing, but personally I would have waited until the killings had slowed down or maybe even stopped before I put a photo of Thai protesters in red shirts up on a website with a giant WHERE'S WALDO caption stuck over it. posted by A Thousand Baited Hooks at 7:07 AM on May 18, 2010 [1 favorite]
I often like the sarcastic caption thing, but in this case I'm with those who are uncomfortable with the gleeful tone of humor being pasted on some of these images of suffering and tragedy. Many are just coming across as insensitive and tone-deaf, like the wise-ass who cracks a joke at the expense of a classmate who just fell off the monkey bars and broke his or her arm, after which everyone is silent but thinking "Shut up, jerk." posted by aught at 7:09 AM on May 18, 2010

Most of these are totally stupid. The hipster cat made me smile; most of the others were just dumb. posted by Forktine at 8:09 AM on May 18, 2010 [1 favorite]
If we'd only had the web 40 years ago, he could have been writing CLOTHING FAIL under pictures of naked Vietnamese kids running away from napalm. Lazy witless garbage. posted by Combustible Edison Lighthouse at 8:16 AM on May 18, 2010 [3 favorites]
If you're going to rip-off the Big Picture, you also need to copy their eminently usable keyboard-based navigation.
Half the pleasure of the Big Picture is being able to just use the 'J' and 'K' keys to instantly move to the next, properly screen-positioned picture, rather than futzing with the mouse to center up the next picture, or (worst of the worst) using some unresponsive click-and-wait-and-wait Flash interface. posted by Dimpy at 8:25 AM on May 18, 2010 [1 favorite]
