Okay, that was fucking hilarious. I've been watching far too many sc2 videos.

That was weird. Is this something I'd need Starcraft 2 beta access to understand, because I'll gladly take any Beta key even though I've never played a Blizzard game before.
posted by mccarty.tim at 5:53 PM on May 18, 2010

I thought it was pretty funny, but, truth be told, I wish it was funny *and* an exploit that worked for the added nerd rage.

mccarty.tim: Oooh you don't want to know what you need to do to get a beta key... you have to work at appleby's for a start...

To be honest, I don't even think I'll buy the game, just watch awesome tournament matches like this one or this one.

It's nothing you couldn't have done in SC1, mixed with some crazy religious silliness and random wrongness.

I'm not a Starcraft 2 expert, but I'm also pretty sure that the strategy isn't actually unbeatable. Maybe.

Well that depends on your goal. If you're trying to win within the confines of the game, no, it's obviously counterproductive and useless. If you're just trolling the game, watching someone spend ten minutes slaving over their build order and frantically searching for your base to launch their assault, and then they find out you're just hovering in a corner and chatting about disney movies or something? Then it's fantastic.

Basically, it's a matter of who you're trying to beat: the terrans attacking you, or the player controlling them.

Well, in SC1, a win was a win. I'd much rather someone do that then the dreaded disconnect.

"Furthermore she has a very, very sexy voice."

I don't think it's wise to say that about Sarah Palin, for any number of reasons.

I wish that I would have found that funny. All it did was awaken my Palin rage.

I certainly hope I wasn't the only one reading the in-game chatter because it was easily the best part.

Not crap. As someone who occasionally delights in video games but sometimes feels like they're mostly just distracting little time vacuums designed to give me a feeling accomplishment while wasting my life tackling pretend challenges with next to no real-world application or reward (I played A LOT of SC1, btw), I applaud the author of this video for defining video game success not as the meaningless defeat of an opponent in a virtual environment, but in wholly rejecting that and instead reveling in oddball nonsense. Very Calvinball. Then she took the replay and goofs over the whole thing, droll and deadpan all the way through, makes it into something fun that can entertain a lot of us miserable keyboard jockeys for a short while. That's something, considering I can watch only watch about 10 seconds of someone else playing video games before I am very honestly suffering and full of spite.

I bet whoever did this is a reliably fun and funny person. Here's to not taking games too seriously!

wait. how was she able to tell that her opponent's characters didn't believe in god? can you really tell that about a video game character just by looking at them?

That was good - was in danger of veering into LOL GIRLS CAN'T PLAY VIDGAEMES!!! and LOLXIANS! a few times, but saved itself by also being really pretty funny. The little asides were particularly excellent, my personal favourite being "Oh, this is my base. All these places look the same. Like minorities."

Similarly if you pre-order online from Best Buy (it must be online, though), you'll get a beta key. Got mine probably within 10 minutes from when I ordered.

Note, though: the beta is ending on the 31st, as per this post. It might be coming back before the game launches, but not necessarily.

Some friends of mine used to play Warcraft 2 with each other. One player was clearly the best at it, and people got tired of playing with, except to play "Farmquest" where they would send out as many orc peons as possible and hide them all over the map, building farms where possible.

posted by StrangerInAStrainedLand at 5:33 PM on May 19, 2010

The beta does end on the 31st, but it is 99% likely there will be a open beta stress test to make sure the Battle.net 2.0 system is up to snuff for launch day. So, you will all get a chance to taste the glory that is Starcraft 2 sometime in late June, I would imagine.
