This is the true story of six strangers picked to live in a module, work together and have their lives taped to find out what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real.

The 520-day Mars-500 spaceflight simulation began today outside of Moscow. The mission: "‘Fly to Mars’ in 250 days, ‘land on and explore Mars’ for a month and ‘return to Earth’ in 230 days" using their mocked up spacecraft, lander and Martian surface.

The spaceship has limited food and a 20-minute communication delay with mission control to simulate the distance between Earth and Mars. The experiment is scheduled to run through November 2011. A few of the crew members will blog during their (extensive) free time.

Not sure, but I do know that this is almost exactly the plot of Victor Pelevin's short novel Omon Ra (which is super awesome, btw).
