For what it's worth, this comic (#66) is apparently from 1951 and the OED gives a first date of 1962 for boner as "erection": 1962 C. SIGAL Going Away 68 The little dog used to raise a boner every time it walked into a room where Rickie was present. So it's possible (unlikely!) that not everyone was in on the joke.
Also, dick butt is way funnier than the bonercomic. posted by barnacles at 12:21 AM on June 11, 2010
Thanks to this post I know now never to buy All-Star Batman. posted by tracicle at 1:26 AM on June 11, 2010
I remember asking my dad about this because he started buying me the Hardy Boys hardbacks for me to read when I was five, and Chet had a nasty habit of saying things like "Well, I guess we really pulled a boner on this one."
I thought it odd at the time that my dad seemed to know every word I asked a definition for, but sidestepped this one until I showed him the context.. posted by hypersloth at 2:19 AM on June 11, 2010 [2 favorites]

Okay, you know what ? I laughed so hard I cried and spat coffee. So screw everyone who doesn't think the joker talking about boners is funny. BONERS ARE FUNNY. THEY ARE REALLY, REALLY FUNNY. THE END. posted by millipede at 6:43 AM on June 11, 2010
I could swear that I have seen this on here before...maybe even twice... but you know? I can't find it. And this is funny. And it made me laugh. So carry on!
PLEASE! Can anyone find for me the Superfriends clip where Batman is guarding Fort Knox and he gets tricked into drinking drugged chicken soup by a mad scientist posing as a street vendor and Batman actually asks if the soup is fresh before buying it? Please? Anyone?
sourwookie, I'm not sure that Superfriends episode really exists, but I definitely have a vivid memory of it now, thanks to you. posted by straight at 8:08 AM on June 11, 2010

Wow that totem really makes me stand by my comment from yesterday that starting at any picture of the Joker is absolutely terrifying. Sometimes he makes me feel like I have some sort of repressed past life John Wayne Gacy memory or something the way I can shiver at clowns.
1958 would have been the 50th anniversary of Merkle's Boner, wonder if this had anything to do with a revival of the term at the time? posted by turducken at 9:07 AM on June 11, 2010 [1 favorite]
I don't get the fresh soup joke. Somebody explain? posted by kaseijin at 9:50 AM on June 11, 2010
i completely forgot that the word boner had another meaning other than phallic. i was wondering how Growing Pains had gotten away with a character named Boner, chalked it up to wacky 80's. posted by fuzzypantalones at 10:37 AM on June 11, 2010
I don't get the fresh soup joke. Somebody explain?
Batman is supposed to be guarding Fort Knox, but is instead spending his time wondering if the clearly shady soup vendor is licensed, whether or not the soup is fresh, and finally the price of the soup. The vendor clearly says the soup is from a can ("just opened it this morning!") and yet Batman goes ahead with the purchase.
Batman - the World's Greatest Detective, Caped Crusader, Dark Knight, Scourge of Criminals Everywhere, Scientist, and one of the richest people in the world - is spending his time haggling over soup with two obvious criminals while standing in front of a chain link fence that appears to be in the middle of the desert. posted by robocop is bleeding at 10:41 AM on June 11, 2010 [3 favorites]
