Don't buy Dubai

What's the ultimate free market? Say "Do buy" and you win.

In contrast to the glossy tourist and business brochures, there's a steep price that's been paid for the (now fading) glitz and glamor that is Dubai.
There were rumblings in the leftist press in 2006, but you'll not see much coming from Dubai natives, except the occasional grump. A look at a dystopian future? Maybe.

Dubai, then and now

I was reading the first link and was like "This all seems very familiar" and then I realized I read it back when it was posted. I hate to cheer on failure, but it seems to me that the failure of Dubai is a net good for humanity.

I can't believe this hasn't been posted already, and I'm struggling to remember where I read about it previously. I only get stuff like this from metafilter usually.

A must read article, although it is extremely upsetting.

When they booked last New Year's Eve as a spectacular illuminated architectural fireworks fest, and signed international clients for the celebration, and then canceled New Year's Eve at the last minute for political reasons? That was an inauspicious development in my mind.

Double. Seanyboy, your instincts were right.

Suddenly it looks less like Manhattan in the sun than Iceland in the desert.

Now that is just uncalled for...

Oh {badword}! I looked to make sure it wasn't a double, too. Like Seanyboy, I couldn't believe it hadn't been posted before.

If it's any consolation, it's a very interesting article which makes an excellent post for MeFi.

Also, more like the Treaty of West-fail-ia, amirite

Agreed. It's an excellent article, and the more exposure it gets the better.
