Kiss your Porn-E-Okie goodbye!
Chicken John, one of San Francisco's leading promoters of cool underground happenings, recently purchased the Odeon Bar. His idea? To provide a space for artistic, creative performances that don't fit in with the mainstream. One of his successes has been Porn-E-Okie, outlandishly cheesy karaoke performances accompanied by custom-edited porn videos. It's an experience that is part comedy, part performance art. It certainly puts songs like "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" in an entirely new light...

Well, thanks to the efforts of the SFPD, Porn-E-Okie is now a felony crime in San Francisco. To obtain his liquor license, Chicken John had to sign a paper promising to never do Porn-E-Okie again as it constitutes "willful and wanton disregard of public welfare and morals". In San Francisco? Are you kidding me?! The police must *love* the Castro...

I might as well add Mayor Willie Brown and President of the Board of Supervisors Tom Ammiano to my address book, because this kind of SFPD stupidity still seems entirely too common.

"willful and wanton disregard of public welfare and morals"???

That kills me. In this city, that someone would hold that against something happening in a club like this. A club I'm sure people don't accidentally stumble into. I don't see where the public's welfare or morals are at stake. If the bar became classified as an adult/topless place, would it be ok?

Did the Mitchell Brothers have to put up with this crap when they started?

Umm ok I totally understand what you are saying but the Castro? Have you ever been to a bar in the Castro, cause I can come up with some much more appropriate neighborhoods to drive home your point. How about North Beach, umm say Broadway. One thing you said on your personal site but did not here is that you doubt that they would try and pull this in a gay club, because too many people would be complaining about discrimination. I'm curious why you omitted that here and I would like to know which gay bar, that you have been in, has something like this. The mystery and the rumors are a whole lot more exciting then the reality.

I tried keeping the post here shorter than the one I put on my site, hence the cutting.

As for video content with nudity and sex, I have seen it in straight clubs, gay clubs, art exhibits, video stores, leather stores, and even little gift stores on the Castro with flags, postcards, books, jewelery, patches... and a gay video section. That doesn't even touch upon all the places that show hentai, which tends to be far more rape-oriented and often more graphic than most pornography.

In other words, it's all over the place. You just haven't gone to the right places at the right times, I guess... Personally, I wouldn't want to name businesses, because I would prefer that those businesses stay in business.
