Why so sad, Lanky Lad?

Neil Cicierega may be responsible for the seizure-inducing style known as Animutation, but his little sister Emmy makes comic-strip gems like this delightful short about a mermaid who just wants to make some friends.

What a remarkably talented family.

What a remarkably talented family.

Remarkably talented? I don't know. They certainly have talent, but no more than any other set of young talented people. Neil's Flash animation was never brilliant; Animutation was pretty explicitly poorly done, and the original music he wrote for his early animutations is hilariously bad. But it's developed from the time he was young, to the point where Lemon Demon has a song or two that are legitimately good.

What astonishes me about Neil (and I suppose about his sister also) is how creative he is, and how willing he is to actually give his ideas a try. Potter Puppet Pals is one of those things where it almost didn't matter whether the story was well-written or absolute trash, it would have been funny simply for the idea. Same thing with The Ultimate Showdown, which is a completely different concept. Occasionally he has ideas that don't get off the ground, but I expected him to stop being interesting in about 2003 and he's managed to constantly come back with things that get my attention. Cheers to that!

That was cute. Also, one of her LJ icons is from Emotion Eric, which is just confounding.

"Hworlb" is a fantastic onomatopoeia.

My cats say it a lot.

Oh, thanks for this, her stuff is awesome and I'm totally spending the rest of my morning looking at it! Ooh, this is also pretty cute.

Ahhhh a friend of mine is/was friends with this guy, so I heard a lot about him and Emmy's creations through her. Seeing him on Metafilter is BIZARRE.

He didn't write the music for his early animutations. It came from other sources.
He did, however, create music around that same time, which he distributed on the old mp3.com even before he did his first animutations. You can listen to his old stuff here. Most of it sounds like it belongs in a cartoonish cart racing video game, for some reason.

I knew him back when he was just posting his stuff in a Monkey Island forum. He shot to fame when borkingchikapa and I decided his animutations should be posted on Fark. It is indeed pretty bizarre to see him on Metafilter!

Talented, maybe, but they've definitely got memes in their genes.

Wait, Stove, you're partly responsible for the popularity of animutations? Holy cow, it's a small internet after all.

As I recall, we had talked about posting it on Fark, and I tried submitting it, but I didn't submit it correctly because I used an old defunct form that was still on the site for some reason. A little while later, borkingchikapa registered and submitted it properly, and it was posted.

This short animation by Emmy always makes me giggle!

I've done several comic collaborations with Emmy, and each time I am humbled because her half of the story always turns out much better than mine. She's one of the best illustrators I know and an all-around lovely person.

And Emmy's design won the Threadless Bestee competition last year. It generated a wee bit of controversy because a lot of people came from outside the normal Threadless community to vote for Emmy and it became a bit of a popularity contest - but then, that's what a popular vote is like, certainly on the Internet. It was probably just a bunch of people like me, who adore pretty much anything Emmy and Nedroid produce because their stuff is great. And the t-shirt's rad, so stuff 'em.
