Shetland Sheepdogs are herding dogs. Herding behavior is basically predatory stalking minus all the biting. As you watch this video, consider that the dog is doing an outstanding job of keeping the baby under control.

That said: sooooo cute!

It seems to me, when puppies play-fight with each other it is distinctly different behavior from genuine, bloodletting fighting. So maybe this is "play-herding" and does not have the aggression or nipping that you would get during actual herding.

My only direct experience with a Sheltie is one I encounter in my neighborhood while walking my dog. The owner brings it to the local park and stands on the lawn while the dog runs around and around at top speed on a retractable leash, barking shrilly and incessantly, non-stop. You can hear the barks for blocks around. As my dog and I get near and the other dog spots us, it goes absolutely nuts and barks even more loudly and shrilly, straining the leash, while the owner just watches and does nothing. I can't tell what my dog thinks of all that. The (very cute) Sheltie in that youtube looks rather sane by comparison.

Shelties are the <strike>best</strike> bitiest, most obnoxiously territorial dogs in the world.

FTFY, crunchland.

YMMV, but I've known several (from different homes) of whom that is true.

Great with your children. Assholes to guests. Perfect for Ted Kozinski.

FTFY, crunchland.

Oh, I don't know. They can be yippy, that's for sure. I had one when I was younger. She was the smartest dog I've ever taken care of. On the other hand, I used to live next door to a woman who had two, and she let them live outside in the backyard when the weather was decent, and those dogs tirelessly barked at everything.

My parents had a Shepherd that they had to get rid of when my brother learned to walk. The Shepherd was a little too enthusiastic about shepherding my brother -- would keep him pinned in the corner of any room he was in, wouldn't let anyone but my parents near him, etc. That was a dog that needed a whole herd of sheep, and a single toddler was really no substitute.

I like when the baby snort laughs (around 1:30). When my son was that age he would start laughing so hard that he would inevitably snort. The noise of the snort would make him laugh even harder, leading to more snorting and even more laughing and even more snorting until tears popped out of his eyes like a little cartoon character.

I plan to tell that story to his first date.

Shelties can go both ways. My friend had one that was the worst neurotic freak, but then, she was the worst neurotic freak herself, so no surprise.

I'll bet that baby's parents were just as fun as he is, and that's why their dog is so great.

I knew a sheltie once that was a reverse guard dog. He loved it when people entered his house, but barked and howled and whined when anyone tried to leave. His owners had to hold him back or he'd nip your pant leg and hold on when you tried to go out the door.

This video is super cute. You can bet that kid is going to grow up to be a dog lover. Even if he forgets what happened on the video, the idea of being ecstatically happy will be mixed up with dogs in his subconscious.

AWWWW!

We just adopted two kittens and we get that KYUTE kitty-playing stuff every day. I can't say I ever get tired of it.

Oh, and it's it the best when the kitty with the loud purr gets on you and nuzzles you and shuts his eyes for a nap? At least until you have to get up for something and you realize that you have to wake the fuzz-ball.

Ah, kids, dogs and kittens...

My herding dog does this exact same thing with our cats. The cat's reaction tends to be less hysterical laughter and more puffing up twice their normal size and frantically spinning around so the dog can't sneak up on them, also; swatting everything in sight.

This gets the dog so excited she starts to zoom around like she's been eating amphetamines all day. Unfortunately, when this happens, it invariably goes on for too long. Not because I'm cruel and want to watch a scared cat, but because I'm laughing so hard, I'm incapable of helping. (This makes me no less cruel, just not as malicious.)

Once my brother was looking after a friend's house out in the country. The people had two Shelties, and neither of them seemed very bright to me. Occasionally a small plane would fly over, and the bigger dog would perk up his ears, spot the plane and then set off running after it. My brother said he would basically run until he met an object that he couldn't jump over. But clearly good with kids!
