Peter Quaife, RIP

Peter Quaife, original bassist for The Kinks, has passed away.

Quaife quit the band in 1969 due to the internal fighting. He helped form the band Maple Oak, but quit after a year. In 1998 he was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure. To pass the time during dialysis, he drew cartoons, later published as The Lighter Side of Dialysis.

Here's a 2005 interview.
A discussion of dialysis and renal failure on the Kidney Talk podcast (um, the hosts are a bit annoying).
And, of course, a few tunes:
"Dead End Street"
"See My Friends"
"Waterloo Sunset"

This is sad, we are getting old. Wonderful selection of tracks, sleepy pete.

Bye Peter!

The anecdote about them drawing straws to see who'd play bass made me laugh, but Pete's death makes me quite sad.

Sad news about one of Muswell Hill's finest exports. I'm sure I won't be the only one lifting a glass in The Clissold Arms tonight.

Big influence when I was a kid. Big influence on all sorts of people. Sorry to see him go.

His drawrings were quite charming, which is not always the case with people who do other things better. RIP. He nailed a lot of dialysis culture, too.

The Kinks were one of the only British Invasion bands with all of their original members still alive. Many held out hope (fueled by occasional rumors) that there might be a reunion.

RIP.

I was actually singing "Picture Book" to myself when I read this news a moment ago. Bizarre. And sad. RIP.

Man, I love The Kinks.

What a loss.

There has never been an album like To the Bone.

Rock on, wherever you may be, PQ.

You know, when I first got to London, one of the things I was most excited about was being able to stand at Waterloo Station on a Friday night. Robert Christgau said Waterloo Sunset was the most beautiful song in the English language, and I'm inclined to agree.

RIP.
