First thoughts after watching this -- instead of etches in plastic, one should be able to reproduce this using any anisotropic material, such as bent shiny wires or even hair. Next step would be a computer program that takes a 3D model and solves for the locations of scratches or wires.

Ok, now someone go do it.

Ah, this is a blast from the past! The video I haven't seen, but the rest of the stuff on the page was online in 1995, it was one of the early cool things to find on the Internet.
