Tuli Kupferberg, poet and co-founder of The Fugs, passed away today at the age of 86. Tuli helped write about himself in the 2009 Harvey Pekar graphic novel The Beats: A Graphic History.
What a synchronic post for me. I just listened to The Fugs First Album for the first time today. I had read about Harry Smith's involvement and I was pleased that he gets a call-out on Nothing. posted by Chinese Jet Pilot at 3:03 PM on July 12, 2010
How would I do a "." that is conveyed very loudly? posted by NoMich at 3:15 PM on July 12, 2010
The Fugs' doing "Couldn't Get High" (live) - this almost single-handedly destroyed my narrow teenage idea of what 60s / "hippie" music was all about, so
I met Tuli at a Zappa concert on St. Marks in December of 1966. I was a 16 year old street kid on the Lower East Side, a baby beatnik slum goddess from the L E S. He was incredibly kind and generous and funny. He gave me a place to stay, fed me, gave me books to read. He listened to me, unlike most men I knew then, and we had serious intellectual conversations. I lost touch with him after I moved away from the city, now I wish I hadn't. posted by mareli at 3:55 PM on July 12, 2010 [11 favorites]
I mean, it had to happen, but, crap. posted by GenjiandProust at 6:22 PM on July 12, 2010
I'm calling my mom now about this. I don't know if she's heard. Last time I visited, we danced around the living room to the Fugs. I suspect she'll be upset about this, as I am.
A word I have never forgotten, thanks to Tuli Kupferberg: hyperemiator. posted by Faze at 7:43 PM on July 12, 2010
1001 Ways to Beat the Draft blew my teenage suburban mind. TK was one of the most seriously anarchist comics to walk the planet. posted by kozad at 7:58 PM on July 12, 2010
