I've never been able to figure out how "versus" started being applied to things that are mixed together. posted by scrowdid at 4:04 PM on July 15, 2010 [2 favorites]
Contra vs. Duck Hunt fails because the laughing dog didn't get torched.
the Oregon trail one had me literally screaming with laughter.

Mash-ups contributed to 'versus'' recent popularity, I think. Mash-up types probably got it partially from DJ battles and soundclashes.

These ones are more literally Vs -- one of them is in each case defeating the other. posted by damehex at 4:59 PM on July 15, 2010
I'm pretty sure the "explanded" definition of "vs." comes from music, where DJ's have been using vs. to describe a remix they did of two artists. posted by mreleganza at 5:16 PM on July 15, 2010

... but have you seen the Dead Fantasy films by Monty Oum (all the Final Fantasy v all the Dead or Alive)? They are amazing.
I really wanted to hate on that conceptually ("Why would these two properties of all things cross-over?"), but I just couldn't. The over-the-top choreography is very well done. posted by Amanojaku at 5:23 PM on July 15, 2010

I have a feeling in about 10 or 15 years or so there will be an app actually capable of deconstructing the object code of various (classic) games and mashing them up in real-time. That would really open some doors in gameplay. Mortimer Goth vs. Scorpion, Crazy Taxi in Paradise City... there's all kinds of potential. posted by crapmatic at 6:31 PM on July 15, 2010
Let me summarize these for you: character from newer game destroys character from older game supposedly demonstrate how awesome it is. Over and over again. posted by JHarris at 6:58 PM on July 15, 2010

I was going to comment on the short and sweet thing too. I've seen way too many videos recently that draaaaaag out a single little joke. Good that these get to the point. posted by grouse at 9:04 PM on July 15, 2010

If you can, try to watch the Death Fantasy films in HD. You'll marvel that this guy wasn't in video game creation previous to this. It's epic and poetic. posted by eatdonuts at 9:36 PM on July 15, 2010
