Its kind of uncanny how I never heard the similarity before and now when I listen to the original LL Cool J version.... Come on Eileen is all I can hear in the background. posted by Pogo_Fuzzybutt at 7:33 PM on July 17, 2010

Because one of your fellow Mefites with a particular affinity for mashups listened to it, and thought it to be particularly good and worthy of highlighting as an FPP.

I'll use this opportunity to once again remind the internet that it's a bit odd that there's no comma before "Eileen" in the song title. posted by Doug Stewart at 7:57 PM on July 17, 2010 [17 favorites]

Haha, I love this. It works beautifully. posted by Nedroid at 7:59 PM on July 17, 2010
I'm just not feeling it either. It's pasting one song on top of another. Much of the time "mashup" is just a code word for "craptastic lazy remix where the minimum possible was done and no one was surprised and/or delighted."
Sorry to pee all over the corn flakes. I'll try to be more upbeat from now on. posted by RobotVoodooPower at 8:14 PM on July 17, 2010 [1 favorite]
It's just perfect. I couldn't stop smiling the whole time. posted by Clamwacker at 8:19 PM on July 17, 2010
The first time I heard "Mama Said Knock you Out" was around age 14 in a car full of dudes who were about to cause the car to swerve off the road with all the head bobbing. The first time I heard "Come on Eileen" was seeing the video on MTV when it originally aired. The reaction was, "oh, that's nice".
This mashup does a disservice to both, and really loses the plot in the middle. posted by Burhanistan at 8:19 PM on July 17, 2010
I also don't trust any mashup DJs who don't offer free downloads. Triplets of Belleville vs. Hot in Herre was cute, tho. posted by mrgrimm at 8:29 PM on July 17, 2010 [1 favorite]

What similarity? You can pretty much put any hip-hop a capella over any song and it works. You don't even need to match keys. posted by empath at 8:38 PM on July 17, 2010
Ehhh sorry. Aside from being done by someone with a reasonable understanding of time signature (which is certainly a plus), it seemed sort of superfluous.
Loved the Belleville vs Hot in Herre, though, mrgrimm!! posted by desuetude at 8:48 PM on July 17, 2010
This confused me, so I'm going to point it out... The music mashup is by DJ Lobsterdust*, the video is by Thriftshop XL.

It reminded me to go dig out the Housemartins CDs that have sifted to the bottom of the stack. Maybe a bit too easy of a mashup, though it did work beautifully. posted by desuetude at 11:02 PM on July 17, 2010

It was better than craptastic and worse than awesome. posted by mreleganza at 11:31 PM on July 17, 2010
Well, for kicks, I'll post one of my all-time favourite mashups, by pheugoo:
I'd managed not to notice, until today, the whole "guys harrassing woman on street corner" bit of the video. Hum. posted by rodgerd at 12:23 AM on July 18, 2010
Should have been Come On Eileen against Eric Johnson's Cliffs of Dover. posted by Wolfdog at 12:46 AM on July 18, 2010
Coldplay vs that Austin Powers Madonna song becomes a very, very melancholy ballad. It is awesome.
Back in the day, one of my favorite mashups was Come On Eileen mashed with Bring the Noise by Public Enemy. Someone barely crapped out 30 seconds of it, and that's all there was, but it was so awesome to hear Chuck D sound SO HAPPY merely because Dexy's Midnight Runners were his backing band.
Before I clicked on this, I expected a mashup of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" and "Milkshake" ... posted by WCityMike at 1:29 PM on July 18, 2010

I can't find the full-length version, but here's the clip you're speaking of, and the nom de plume of the person who mashed it up is Audio Shrapnel. posted by WCityMike at 1:42 PM on July 18, 2010 [1 favorite]
empath: 23: I think it's on the girl talk Feed The Animals cd.
No, it's not. The CD features part of "Come On Eileen" in "Set It Off", but doesn't feature "Bring the Noise." posted by WCityMike at 1:44 PM on July 18, 2010
Also, 23skiddoo, you might want to keep an eye on this thread. It looks as if as recently as July 14, someone asked a mashup forum for the very same song. If someone replies, you'll have your linkage. Also, back in '03, Cory mentioned it favorably. posted by WCityMike at 1:47 PM on July 18, 2010

Dexy's Midnight Runners vs. L.L. Cool J?
Personally, one of my favorites has always been Love Will Tear You Apart (She Wants Originality). I like those mashups where the ripoff band (She Wants Revenge) is mashed up with the original (Joy Division), or with songs in similar genres.
