The Haunter of the Dark - The H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast presents a superb reading of Lovecraft's last tale by Andrew Leman. Kenneth Hite gives some background to the story, which was part of a in-joke laden trilogy of stories by Lovecraft and Robert Bloch, in which they killed off thinly veiled fictional versions of each other.

All of the H.P. Podcraft readers are good, but Andrew Leman is really something special. I would happily listen to him reading any Lovecraftian fiction. Yes, even The Horror at Red Hook. Maybe not The Street. Hearing the podcast grow has been kind of amazing, and really inspirational in terms of what fandom can accomplish. Chad and Chris aren't media giants or Lovecraft-specializing academics; they're just a couple of guys who happen to enjoy Lovecraft and thought that it would be fun to do an internet radio show. Every now and then, they'll say "Hey, wouldn't it be neat to get [Ken Hite/Stuart Gordon/S.T. Joshi/etc] to do the show?" I don't think, especially early on, they ever expected to get some of the guests that they've had, but they made an honest effort, and it's paid off to an extremely impressive degree.

19 Nocturne Boulevard did a rather nice radio play adaption of Haunter of the Dark. A little silly for purists, but it's a fun take on telling the story after the fact.

And here's where you can find a whole ton of Lovecraft's works (about 60, I think). And, despite the name of the hosting site, this is not a self-link. Also, since that site design comes shambling from the ancient eldritch age of 1999 or something, you may want to use something like Readable to improve the layout with a reading experience that won't drive you gibbering mad... quite as quickly.

Ken Hite is amazing - his Suppressed Transmission column in the gaming magazine Pyramid was one of the most consistently interesting reads out there and his lj still throws up sparks of awesome on a regular basis. I've lost track of the number of fantastic book recommendations I've had from him. An excellent author and an absolute treasure trove of "hidden history" stuff. He's currently finishing off the 4e GURPS Horror book and if the "The Madness Dossier" from 3e is anything to go by this will be another fantastic read.

I'm not quite sure of this, but I think the comic version might have been more loaded with the references than the prose version - certainly the big splash panels for the Aklo stuff had a ton of visual references.
