The gravestones of Maramures

Metafilter's own zaelic has a blog. For a long time I've been addicted to this blend of music, treyf food and travelogue, but my greatest vicarious pleasure in ages has been in a graveyard.

I can't stop reading this now that I started. It's really fantastic. Oh, to have one of these in my hand right now!

Very interesting, thanks for posting it.

Those Săpânţa grave markers are fascinating - and I love zaelic's commentary. This is getting added to my blog reading list. And those food pictures are torture if you're looking at the blog hungry. Thanks.

Ha. I had the exact opposite reaction. I was ready for breakfast and completely lost my appetite.

I'm going to enjoy trawling through this blog, although how I'm going to do this without vast quantities of meat-product, I've no idea. Oh well, guess I'll get the pig knuckles out of the freezer and make a start.

I do not write this to be rude or with snark but is zaelic someone who is well known on mefi? The way you introduce your post makes it seem that way.

belvidere, if that's the case, I'll bet your cholesterol is also lower than mine!

I heartily recommend anything zaelic-related.

You really could have kept that to yourself or, in the event of irresistible curiosity, MeMailed the poster. He's known to me; he's not known to you. What do you want, a statistical breakdown?

Great post and blog. Woke up early and have been reading it through breakfast (non-meat) and beyond.

Yes, zaelic is well known here to some as a big brain on Eastern European folk music and its derivatives (or relatives!). Appreciated this post.

I think it's a fair question and I asked politely. Now I know that he's someone you know and follow. With the thousands that are on this site I am sure there are others who also have no idea who this person is. Some mefites are better known than others. Just a question friend, no need to ruffle your feathers.

I'm sure there are, and most of them will follow the links and learn instead of saying "Who is this guy?"

Metafilter: well known on mefi?

I first learned of the Săpânţa grave markers from watching Anthony Bourdain's visit to Romania.

You know, it really is a *happy* cemetery. I don't think I'd mind being buried there, even if they depicted me in red skivvies* like the official bad girl of the town. I'd certainly be remembered!

*I debated with myself over the terminology to use. "Underwear" is too stodgy, "panties" sounds apparently ranks right up there with "moist" on the Mefi blech-o-meter. Knickers was my next choice.

I've never heard of this metafilter, what is it?

No way I'm reading that dude's blog if he's not well-known and important!

Thanks everybody for your enthusiasm! My GF keeps saying that I should only concentrate on one theme in the blog: food, or music. I can't differentiate them - they always go together in my travels. Traveling musicians... ( Full confession - someplace back in the 20th century I whacked agogo bells and shook gourds backing up our esteemed Flapjaxx on Yoruba drums in a theater production of Amiri Baraka's Slave Ship. We go wayyyy back.)

In the next few weeks I'm heading out to Bulgaria for the Koprivshtitsa Folk festival (which happens every five years and only features non-professional village folk musicians) and then to Istanbul for a few weeks (Ramadan festival food!), then back to Budapest and in September off to Toronto and then New York - if all goes well I am presenting the Tecsői Banda (previously on metafilter) at the Black Sea Festival in Central Park on September 26th.

I will think of you all as I eat all that grilled meat. Hey, I'll even take a picture!

I love the variety, don't stick with just one, it's fun to blend.

Music is food, food is music. And vice versa.

Drat, there /were/ enough of us there to have had a Koprivshtitsa meetup.
