snookin for love

Snooki, of Jersey Shore fame, has been profiled in the New York Times. Is it any wonder that it is less than positive? Previously on MetaFilter.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Ugh, I don't think anybody doesn't think Jersey Shore is kind of a horrible media artifact in the first place and one long bumpy post about it this year was probably enough. -- cortex

I have to say that no matter how horrendous Jersey Shore is (although featuring the male cast on the Village Voice's Queer Issue was hilarious,) this little meta-sketch redeemed them for me at least a little.

I've never watched Jersey Shore, nor do I have any plans to, and I don't know much about this Snooki chick, but I'd like to counter the avalanche of greaseball/guido/Jersey jokes by mentioning that I've know plenty of people who've looked like these folks who were actually really great people. YMMV.

Shit Sandwich, served on the Jersey shore, eat up, there's more where that came from.

I don't know...I think I am in the "less-than-positive profile or no, why give these assholes more exposure?" camp.

I find that opinion to be a little hypocritical, although not of you personally, m0nm0n. We all love to pile on the NYT being behind the times and a dinosaur, but they get backlash when they try to cover cultural phenomena. And Jersey Shore is a bona-fide cultural phenomenon. Why give them more exposure? Because it's cultural news.

What's the point of this post? Not being specious, I really can't figure it out.

I've never watched the show, but this horrible excuse for a story seems to have as its only purpose, to tear down and insult this woman. We have enough of that kind of thing going on in the world.

And this FPP, by extension, seems made for us for the sole reason to point and laugh.

"[Slitscan's audience] is best visualized as a vicious, lazy, profoundly ignorant, perpetually hungry organism craving the warm god-flesh of the anointed. Personally I like to imagine something the size of a baby hippo, the color of a week-old boiled potato, that lives by itself, in the dark, in a double-wide on the outskirts of Topeka. It's covered with eyes and it sweats constantly. The sweat runs into those eyes and makes them sting. It has no mouth, Laney, no genitals, and can only express its mute extremes of murderous rage and infantile desire by changing the channels on a universal remote. Or by voting in presidential elections."

I can hardly imagine what it must be like to be an Italian-American and have Jersey Shore be the popular culture representation of my ethnic group. Maybe if MTV did a reality show called Southie where Irish-Americans were represented by a group of brawling drunks.

As for Snooki herself, she seems to have been spoiled for almost all her life and her handlers probably already have the ten-years-past what-ever-happened-to special already planned.
