Little Drifters

Lenny makes tiny boats from natural flotsam and jetsam. His creations inspired a community art project called Little Drifters. Participants in Vancouver set their boats adrift on Trout Lake this past Saturday. (via)

Not a call-out, I just love this guy's stuff. I went down to the park with my daughter to play in the water and look for crayfish, and I had the idea of making a little boat to float in the lake. My daughter was captivated despite my crude boat-smithing skills. When I got home I decided to search the internet for driftwood boats, found his filckr pool, and spent four hours or so, rapt.

My boats have gotten a lot better, but Lenny's are still the goal I strive towards.

Oh Metafilter, why must you tell me about this after it happened. I'm in Vancouver, I love the idea, and it looks as though a good time was had by all.

Ensconced within my sandcastle's walls I shall plot my revenge, at least until the tide comes in.

Really? How much jetsam does he find? And how does he know it's jetsam and not just flotsam?

That's great! I do this all the time myself whenever I stumble upon a stream in the woods. Been doing it since I was a kid, now 25 and don't plan to stop. Fun to see that other grownups do it too!

And how does he know it's jetsam and not just flotsam?

Flotsam is used for buoyancy, while jetsam is used for propulsion.

I used to make submarines out of rocks. They were supposed to be boats, but after some initial testing, I realized they made way better submarines.

This is what I spent my childhood doing. Back then we went for distance, not aesthetics.
