Call the Vatican. Or Boston Public Library. Or Grand Central Station. A few friends of mine used to use this tactic to see what the weather is like. This is a database of public pay-phone numbers, along with location and occasional sundry information. Read, call, and contribute!

The best part of this site is the stories he tells about the different numbers. It's interesting that there are any phones in New York City that still receive calls. For a long time, at the behest of police and the city, the phone company disabled this feature to prevent them being used for drug dealing. I'm not sure how that worked, but I do know that in poor neighborhoods, a lot of folks don't have phones (or intermittent service only when they can pay the bill), so pay phones were key for receiving calls.
