Science as Fan-Fic

Back in January, Dr. Megan Argo and an international team working at Jodrell Bank detected a powerful jet of energy from supernova 2007gr. Her way of announcing it? Doctor Who fan fiction describing the event from a TARDIS eye view. [via]

How does she get away with this? I've tried to deliver presentations at work in character as Adric, and I get nothing but strange looks and a note in my personnel file.

That is fantastic! (Wrong doctor, I know, but it felt appropriate. And man, how awesome would 9 and Martha together have been?)

Now they just need to write an episode of Doctor Who in which a powerful jet of energy from a supernova is observed and described in a very technical, boring paper.

Choosing Martha as the companion... brave move, unorthodox. I like her style.

Maybe they hate Adric just as much as 90% of the rest of Whovian fandom.

Nice. All science fiction papers should be written this way. In fact, I think I may go create a peer-reviewed journal which only accepts papers written as Dr. Who fan fiction. Entries will be reviewed for accuracy by both a scientific expert committee and a Dr. Who expert committee. Allons-y!

In that case, I would be so much happier to do lit review.

I keeed, I keeed.

Mrs.Charred Husk-to-be teaches astronomy and I recently got her hooked on Dr.Who. I should see if I can get her to make this required reading in her class.

Mrs.Charred Husk-to-be

Speaking as someone who often refers to Mrs. Bronzefist or even Mrs. Fist, this wins for most distressing reference to a MeFite's significant other

Hey, at least Who has the balls to get rid of sidekicks in famously heartless ways.

With a grating, wheezing noise, a small blue box flickered into existence.

Not even so much fan fiction, but sounds like in the first couple of lines that it could have been written by Terrance Dicks -- or at least something for the Target line.

(For those of you who aren't fans, this is a pretty awesome thing.)

"It's beautiful. But... why are we here?"
"Why not?" he said. "Have you ever seen a star explode?!"

Poor Martha, little did he know that as soon as her back was turned, the Doctor was going to try to use that energy to make a call to Rose.

As far as companions go, I feel I must admit ... yes, I applauded when Adric died.

If only Mel had been killed off. I couldn't stand her, either.

As long as we're having this companion discussion, I sill feel all tingly when I think of Peri.

Leela for me.

I recently went through and rewatched all the Leela episodes. She was so badass. I especially appreciate the arguments between her and the Doctor about the effectiveness of Leela going on a murderous rampage in a given situation.

Also, I always wished the Doctor could have had Jamie, Leela, and Ace as companions at the same time. That would have been a formidable fighting force!

And K9, of course.
