The Oxford Reading Tree was a set of books for reception-age children to learn how to read, staring Biff, Chip and their dog Kipper. One blogger has decided to keep the memory of teaching her kids by embroidering her own versions.

I never got to read these books as I was too advanced - I had to take separate English lessons during almost all of primary school so never read a lot of the books others did - which made me sad as I liked Kipper.

However, the illustrator came to our school and drew a picture of Chip looking up. 'What is he standing under?' 'A tree!' said someone, so he drew a tree. 'What kind of tree?' I shouted 'A CAKE TREE!!!!' So the artist drew a tree laden with lovely cakes, a couple of tubs of ice-cream, and sketched in a tongue on Chip so he was licking his lips.

Biff, Chip and their dog Kipper.

The characters show up in the US too-- as the insufferable preppies in 1980's college comedies.

I thought kippers were what you had smoked for you because you'd undoubtedly be back before breakfast.
