Matt's back, and so is Metafilter! Just in time too, because I was about to get a big promotion for all the work I've finished in the last two weeks. What did you do on your MeFi vacation?

Is it over already? Wow. I've missed Metafilter. Will it be the same after we've all learned to live without it...?

I sure haven't minded the fact that traffic on my website has tripled in the interim, though - thanks for the front page link, Matt!

If there were 22 links and 191 comments since my last visit, where are they?

I spent the week watching my web site logs. Discovering that people are interested in Laetitia Casta's pregnancy, Jennifer Stahl the murdered drug dealer, New York Times reporter Charlie LeDuff, housing in the Williamsburg area of Brooklyn, Boca Chica and sex (and I *still* can't figure out what in the hell they're all really looking for), "chuck knoblauch girlfriend," the French Carte Bleu, the Fulton Fish Market, pictures of Judith Light, etc., etc.

Metafilter, incidentally, jumped up to third place in my referrers, after Google and Yahoo. Thanks, Matt, for the link.

First: Welcome home, Matt! My thrice-daily dose of MeFi was sorely missed during your absence.

Second: During the down-time, I actually ventured beyond the reach of my keyboard...long enough to research many options and finally decide to purchase a new toy. Yay! No wireless-access for me, though...but it will be sorta nice to download the longer threads to peruse during the endless staff meetings that I have to sit through.

Three: Did I already say "Welcome home, Matt!"?? Worth repeating.

Four: Fellow MeFi-ers - I look forward to resuming our ongoing intellectual, mature, civilized dialogues. Um...well, you know...and the other stuff, too.

I'm with fooljay -- laid off. In the mean time, built a computer, installed linux, apache, IPMasquerade, php, mysql, etc etc. Went hiking (Dromery Ridge, Lena Lake with the pregnant lady), toured the Olympic peninsula with the pregnant lady (hey, what can I say, she's my gal), biked vashon island, cooked a lot. All in all, way too much housework.

Blundering my way through the linux stuff was enough to keep me fairly busy...

Oh yeah, applied for 3 jobs a week...

I ate a bit of icing from the carton, took some photos from a cheap camera, designed a local band's website, worked quite a bit, stayed up late, kicked the cat (accidentally, I swear!), changed my underwear and socks numerous times, cleaned my room, watched people play Othello, made a dog bark at me, jaywalked, showered, talked, and started my junior year of high school.

Mm hmm. Let's see, I...

1.) lost my job
2.) applied for more jobs
3.) found a few new weblogs that may be worth reading
4.) redesigned the front page of my site
5.) redesigned AJ's site
6.) read one thread on kuro5hin that was really lame and everyone there thought the "lost generation" was from the 1950's.
7.) packed to move back to school.
8.) drove around randomly.
9.) critiqued the web design of major religious denominations. I have not yet found one to be standards-compliant. If I do, I'll convert.
10.) Talked to people on AIM. Specifically, one of my friends who's back at school already. He's been online a lot.

Oh joy, its back!

I went travelling to get over a serious lack of stimulating web content and a sudden eligability for unemployment benefits.

The one thing I discovered in MeFi's absence was that I could send something called "email" on this internet thingee. Its sort of like a letter, but its eclect-ri-tronic or something! I think its made by Microsoft or some-such, you guys might want to find out about it.

I'm off deeper into the Australian Outback (I sheared a sheep yesterday, I'm going gold panning tomorrow) for a few months.

All I'll need on my return is a job to fuel my MeFi habit.

Missed MeFi more than I thought I would. And I thought I would.

Started a diet. Read The Death of Sweet Mister by Daniel Woodrell (Oedipus in the Ozarks in the 60s--rich and scary, and a very fast read). Watched a movie from '96 called Kissed on video--a very unsettling but well-done story about a woman (Molly Parker) who worships through necrophilia. Canadian of course.

Kind of lost some interest in the Net.

Saw The Seagull performed at Shakespeare in the Park, and two short movies: The Dutch Master and The Cloud Door, part of Regina Ziegler's Erotic Tales series, at MoMA.

Also, while strolling through the Mies van der Rohe exhibit at MoMA, I found out that there are times when I just freeze in front of some female species, when I really want to smile and say, 'hi'. The embarrassment of the sudden system loss is multiplied when the said strange female stands in front of the "frozen" person, and says staring at him, "I have no idea why you just froze. I am still a human."

I need to work on my social skills.

My latest book was officially released. I found out that it won't be made available on Amazon. I cried.

I went on vacation. I went into a swimming pool for the first time in years. I found out (the hard way) that I still can't swim.

I got a new digital camera to replace one of the ones that I lost when I was mugged/robbed last month. The camera sucked, literally -- 2 sets of AA alkaline batteries to capture all of 20 images on the lowest resolution and quality setting. Ouch. So then I got a different one and it rocks my world.

I took many, many pictures, including many horribly saccarine shots of my new dog. I contemplated PHP. I contemplated (and continue to contemplate) a dogblog. I visited and linked to Hi Monkey a lot. I got three e-mails from Monkey himself, thanking me for linking to his site everywhere. Monkey is still cooler than words.

I missed MeFi. I'm so glad it's back that my hands are shaking.
